All I can say is Bill Russell was "great" ONLY because he was over a foot taller than anyone in his time.

I'll put my money on Shaq ANYDAY if him and Russell were to toe off in their prime. It doesn't take a brain surgeon rebound. Also Shaq isn't supposed to be out taking the J. He's doing just fine leading the league in scroing down low.

KANTONBURG: Wrong

Bill Russell went head-to-head with Wilt Chamberlain for years. Wilt was clearly the better specimen yet Russell's teams always beat his teams when it counted: in the finals.

Always hard to compare eras, but Chamberlain was a monster and Russell handled him just fine.

LMAO!

Well said trmiv!

If you think shaq has no skills or agility you are either blind or have not seen him dribble. He has mad handles. Much better than any of us. And to say he is boring? Gads, he's anything but boring. Even if "all he does is dunk" he is not boring. Like trmiv said, his drop-step in the post is a thing of beauty. He is also a soft-spoken gentle giant who must have patience beyond all considering he gets fouled damn near everytime he touches the rock. Unlike punk-b*tches like Rasheed Wallace, he does not cry about every call that goes against him.

One more thing: He is the champ-Scoreboard babee!

Additionally, back in those days the players played their "own" positions. Everyone's area of play was cut and dried. That is, only the big boys - the centers - patrolled the middle and got all the rebounds. Guards, for the most part, stayed out in the perimeter ... or much more so back then than now.

You have guards like Jason Kidd and others who can get over 10 boards a game. Everyone is competing for rebounds and the rock.

If Shaq played during the Chamberlain/Russell era he would have eaten them up big time. It wouldn't be funny.

However, having said that, if Chamberlain and Russell were raised up with the nutrition, drugs, and had the benefits of modern training tools and techniques of today's era then i'm sure that they would be competitive as well. It's a situation of "what if?"

How about modern day football players? That would be interesting to see the 340lb offensive lineup of today mix it up with the 240lb DE's of yesteryear.

By big, I meant muscular and powerful, not weighty. You can defend against anyone's dropstep if you have enough mass/strength. If you don't, they go right past you. BTW, I think that drop-steps and other basic, effective moves aren't used enough in the NBA. Too much flash.

All they would need him to do is dunk! These ARE the Olympics after all, the chance for Team USA to show off in front of the world.

Actually, I'm glad that Shaq isn't playing. While he's a great player, the Olympics are supposed to be about ametures, which is something Shaq's not close to. While it's still not ametures to see guys like Steve Smith playing, they're normally 2nd string, so it'll give them some "star power", and they're a little more ameture than Shaq.:)
