Know where I can buy a good (big & tall) cat tree?

...at a reasonable price? I went to store like Petco & PetSmart and a 3 foot tall tree is like $139. Seriously? I need to get a cat tree for our 2 cats as they are starting to claw things around the house. So I'd like a cat tree with a built in scratching post. Plus they have a tendency to climb on top of tall things like the fridge so I want a taller cat tree. I'm not ruling out a floor to ceiling cat tree. Anybody recommend a site?

If there are any cats shows in your area, there might be a vendor selling them. I agree that PetSmart et al are a bit steep.

Check amazon. I've also got a couple of 6 ft ones I bought from Petsmart that didn't cost me more than $120.00 each.

Trade show or craiglist for local. Sometimes they do have decent $20+ off coupons for petsmart/petco. Their base price seems to be higher than other stores though. I've seen the smaller trees at the closeout stores like biglots/ollies.

Amazon has good prices on the cat trees and some are prime eligible. They usually have a deal on them for black friday. I bought one for 50% off their site a couple of years ago. It was actually a pricematch of a petsmart deal.

Build your own

Found a nice clearance one on buy.com a few months back. It's 8 ft tall and was really wide too. Was only $40 shipped I think. Good deal at that price. The pet store prices of $100+ for anything that comes up to crotch height is stupid to pay.

That's so awesome!

But yeah I'd probably just build my own. Though, when there are some for under $100 sometimes it makes sense to buy. A typical sheet of plywood is about 60 bucks, then add more materials and your time and a self built one could end up costing a bit over $100. Though, with one sheet of plywood you could do a pretty massive one.

I picked up a pretty good one at Costco. It was 89.99. At first I thought that was steep but I too looked around and it is near impossible to buy a pre made one for under $100.

These were recommended by the breeder we got our Maine my excellent compatriot cats from. We got one and it is without a doubt the best cat tree I've ever seen. Well made, strong, and durable. They are modular so you can customize.

Skip the crap at the pet stores. It is all cheap garbage.

Try this place:

Bought one here since it was local to us so no shipping. Even with shipping, still a decent price.

I don't want to spend the dough, so I've built two out of scrap material (the second after the first wore out).

Here's the first; the second turned out even better, but I don't have a pic handy:

The best possible thing for your cats to claw on is a 4" square cedar post. Go to a lumber yard, and get an untreated 12 foot cedar post and have them cut it into 3 4' long sections. Then get a base for each section, cheap plywood or particle board that's about 18" square or round will do, attach at the bottom of a post with long screws, and you're done. Some cats might prefer if the cedar logs are on the floor, instead. You can try 2 posts, and put the other one on the ground someplace, and put a small wooden end piece on it so it don't flip around when they claw on it, too.

These do tend to get a bit messy, so put it someplace where you won't see the cedar slivers the cats tear off between vacuuming. The natural cedar oils in the wood also repel fleas and ticks from a cats feet, and that's often where cats have a problem with them between their claws and picking them up outside.
