Know of a small displacement high RPM engine from the 70s?

I am looking for ANYTHING under 2L in displacement, normaly aspirated, that puts out as much horsepower as possible, from the 70s. Something similar to the modern engine in the Honda S2000, a racing engine would be fine. Thanks.

How about a rotary.

1978 RX-7, 100bhp @ 6000rpm, 1.2 liter.

Good numbers for it's time, though modern day engines are obviously more advanced.

Not familiar with racing engines of the 70s.

Was going to say the same thing myself... 12A from the original Rex is just about the only one... High-output, small engines weren't too popular back then ;)

Ford used to sell a 1.6 & 2.0L Kent engine in the early pintos, but I think they only had 80-100 hp.

Try looking for a late 60s (if that's okay) Datsun 2000 Roadster engine.

2.0L, dual carbs, with the right amount of tuning can do 150-160HP

I've seen someone towing a boat around with one of those little cars, pretty hot for how old they are.

That first RX-7 is nice, but a Cosworth Vega would be a better choice. Very cool cars.

For deep pocket$..Lotus, anything Cosworth, or Coventry Climax :) gotta love that name.

The Pinto OHC 4's have a boat load of after market stuff.

I love 70's Datsuns but the 2000 Fair Lady engine falls short. Any of the L-series 4 cyl.engines is the way to go.
They are a Z-series engine but as a 4, so there is gobs of gear for them.

The early Toyota 4's are Ok, but the Datsun, properly done will out do em'.

Alfa Rameo 4'$ :) Nice exhaust note :music:

BMW 1600 or 2002, the 72'tii is tits.

VW, some of the early 4's could be made to go, but suffer head gasket problems and a very crowded port face (thats where there is very little gasket surface between ports.

VW flat fours are fun to do but I want OHC if not DOHC and that takes us to Por$che :p

Get this book..ISBN 0-8376-0140-1, Phillip H. Smith is the MAN, when it comes to small/hi-output, older engines.

EDIT: Check Austrailian websites for hot-rodding small engines. The guys in OZ are like the USA was in the 60's & 70's,
when it comes to building small hi-output motors. Some out-fits down-under are making really sweet cylinder heads
to retro-fit older engines. Horsepower is in the port and combustion chamber design.

not from that era i don't think... and not that small, either.
i know you can shift some of the big block V8's at pretty high RPM if you are careful, but that doesn't count :p

Thanks for the good info. I am not looking to purchase a motor or anything, I just need some examples. Got in a bit of an argument with someone who was saying that in the 70s and early 80s, the only way to make a lot of power was with a huge turbo, or lots of displacement :)

Not so, look into the old Indy car motors.

Beat me 2 it.

Look up the Cosworth Vega.

It is a RWD car with a very supped up motor. Its bigger brother the Monza, same car just with a V8.
