Knoppix

I really like Knoppix and would like a non-live version to be permanently installed on my hard drive, is there a non live cd version that boots and installs or can I use the live CD to install to my hard drive.

There is a knoppix-install script on the live cd that should help you out with installing it.

oops. I think it's actually knx-install

I am still learning knoppix, what is the name of the script and what is the command?

from what i've read its possible, but its really better and easier to install another distro

Any distro recomendations?

Also this was in the Knoppix Cheatsheat, I know DOS well but I am still learning linux and do no know how to implement this:
Could this be what it need? Do I just dump the CD Contents to the HDD?

knoppix fromhd=/dev/hda1
Boot from previously copied CD-Image

knoppix bootfrom=/dev/hda1
Access Image then boot from previously copied CD-Image (enables booting from NTFS / ReiserFS) ***)

***) Bootfrom needs access to a running Knoppix-System with the same Kernel
as the Bootkernel, before it is able to mount the partition / ISO-Image.
This should allow a poor mans install from NTFS-Partitions and makes it
also possible to boot an ISO-Image directly. You can also use wildcards
in the ISO-Filename, but it must be unique. So: If you have just one
KNOPPIX.iso on /dev/hda1 you can access it as: bootfrom=/dev/hda1/K*.iso,
but if there are several, you need to make clear, which one you want.

generally here u see recommendations of all the major distros it seems lol🙂 its like people recommend the one they first try? guess it means they are getting there in terms of ease of install. just go to distrowatch.org and go ennie meenie minie moe😉 fedora/debian whatever

I don't know if knoppix has a gui installation for newbies. If you want to install knoppix in your hd w/ an easy gui installation, try kanotix which is based on knoppix w/ a nice gui installation.

i'm still perplexed why so many folks recommend ubuntu

I'd recommend fedore core or mandrivia for the new user.

If you REALLY want to learn linux, i'd go for gentoo 😀 (my fav)

I have looked at about 10 to 15 + or - distros

fedora
ubuntu
ark
mepis
Mandrake
knoppix
DSL
Beatrix
puppy
gnoppix
blag
linux Xp
tried kanotix but it wouldn't boot

the smoothest and most user friendly I have found is
pclos

But what does FC or Mandriva offer that Ubuntu doesn't? A GUI installer? You only need to see that once, so who cares? Ubuntu has more packages and they're generally of much higher quality.

Right, because watching gcc output scroll for hours teach you a whole lot...

I had downloaded Ubuntu a while ago but never installed it, however I did install Xandros and it was very slow; Windows XP was way faster on the same machine. Thanks for the debates, keep them coming!
