knoppix question

Ok, I'm downloading knoppix 3.4 off of an ftp server. Is that iso the only thing i need? Or do I need that md5 file or whatever else to run knoppix? Thanks

Just the ISO is sufficient. The MD5 is merely a checksum to ensure that you have no corruption; you don't need it.

ok, i downloaded and burned knoppix to a cd. After it booted up, and went into the OS, everything was in German. Is this by default? Or did I by some weird chance download the wrong version of Knoppix? Also are there any tutorials on the net, on getting started with knoppix? Thanks

dynasty: It depends on the version of knoppix that you downloaded, some versions come by default with german, but I believe you can change that by using some options. When you boot with knoppix and the screen says "boot: ", press F2, and then type "knoppix lang=us", I think, you can double check me, because it lists the options that you have.

yes, you will because remember none of the settings are saved to your hdd. There's a way to save your setting to a media, so they can be loaded up every time, but I don't know how to, you can probably read that stuff in the knoppix website.

You might have downloaded the wrong version of Knoppix. One distro is in German, the other is in English. Make sure you get the -EN iso, not the -DE iso.

I downloaded the "EN" version, but it downloaded as an .rar file that I extracted to a folder & burnt to cd. I set my bios to boot from my secondary master (NEC DVD RW), but it won't boot.
Suggestions? Comments?

That's odd. Normally the distro is an ISO. Make sure that you grab it from one of the official mirrors or the torrent.

I got it off the torrent, then I decided to go to Knoppix.org & downloaded from one of their servers in the US. Same thing...it downloaded as a .rar.
Should I set my NEC as secondary slave & my Plextor as secondary Master? Do you think it's got something to do with not wanting to boot from the DVD Burner?

English version of Knoppix 3.4, downloaded and burned by myself a week or so ago. Check md5sum, burn image, boot computer. In english.

OK, I changed my settings in Win RAR to not associate it to iso files & burned another disc, this time as an image. That worked & it booted into Knoppix.
Now the problem is that Knoppix doesn't recognize my network adapter (Asus K8V SE motherboard) & I can't get online.
Ideas? Suggestions?

That one's going to be tricky. It looks like the driver you need is only available as a kernel patch, and patching the kernel requires that you have the OS installed to the hard disk.

Naw...I don't think i'll try that...hehehe. I downloaded Knoppix to get a taste of Linux. If there's not an easy to use/setup version out there (preferably 64 bit), i'll wait & continue using M$.

Knoppix didn't detect my nforce2 onboard lan either.
I plugged in a PCI NIC that windows didn't recognize, and it booted up fine.

One thing I was impressed with, is that it tells you what core you are running on your 9800pro, so you don't have to take the heatsink off!!!
