Knology. New Modem Necessary?!

Hello all!

I have basic cable modem service thru Knology, my ISP. I was told that in order to upgrade my service I would have to use either a Scientific Atlantic DPC2100 or Arris CM550. It appears that neither of these modems are very common so I would have to rent one from Knology at $4/month.

Is this really necessary though?! What makes these modems different from my Linksys CM100? I feel like I'm being fleeced here...

I don't see why. I mean if you were upgrading to DOCSIS 3.0 then I could see...but neither of the other 2 support that either.

I would ask they why I needed to upgrade...I think they just want to make some extra $$$.

I just sent back to Verizon an expensive Modem that was forced upon me and it was not really needed when i recently upgrading my DSL from 3Mb/sec. to 7.2Mb/sec.

But Each case and system can be different, and YMMV.
