Knock-off food products are not as good as the original.

Heinz > Hunt's

American transformers was a knockoff of Gobots which itself was a knockoff of Japanese transformers.

Fruity Dino-Bits >= Fruity Pebbles

Get the no HFCS stuff, really good and actually cheaper than Heinz(at least where I buy it it is).

If it turns out that Hunt's is better, I don't know what I will do with myself, my whole worldview will have been put on its head.

I prefer Great Value Graham Crackers to Nabisco, but most of the GV cookie lines do come up short.

Nobody's generic soups measure up to Progresso.

I'm enjoying my dessert of Great Value Twist & Shout sandwich cookies. They're okay, but definitely not Oreos.

My wife does a fantastic job with the food budget, but sometimes it doesn't pay to get the cheap brand. The items below should not be substituted for. Please add your own.

Hellmann's mayo (may be blue ribbon for some of you weirdos)
Kraft Mac & Cheese
Hunt's ketchip
Apple Jacks, Fruit Loops, Honey Combs etc > Any Malt-O-Meal bag cereal (though the fake honey smacks are good)
Doritos

Are there any cases where you prefer the cheap brand?
You just discovered this?

There is NO SUCH THING as "generic Oreos."

...same for Cherios, too.

Dr. Pepper
Doritos
Well, soft drinks in general
Oreos (though I've had one or two brands that are really good actually)
Ketchup

Mhm...that is about it. I like some "knock-off" products better than the original.

kroger brand generic foods are pretty awesome... theyre mainly in the midwest i think. you get great prices over brand name and the taste/quality is many times on par, never so bad that its not worth it.

example, kroger pizza rolls are surprisingly good. same goes for their soda pop, tortilla chips, paper towels, ground beef, cheese, bread.... like i said really all of it.

Yeah...but the "other brands" are just really good cookies. They don't really compare to Oreos...which are uniquely awesome.

Hydrox may have been first-to-market, but Hydrox is soundly beaten. Oreos > Hydrox

I always thought Kroger started in the southeast. I have 3 of them within 20mins driving distance. Also, when I'd travel north, I wouldn't see Kroger stores anymore.

Wiki tells me it was founded in Ohio.

Best Food/Helmann's Mayo
Campbell's Cream of Mushroom Soup

Can't substitute the above for the "generic"

i disagree with the cereal. the generics are the same as the name brand cereal.

i agree on the pizza though. great value pizza is just garbage. all bread.

The only thing I think I've ever bought a store brand and liked it more than the national brand is low calorie, splenda sweetened strawberry jelly. Smuckers' product was pure shit compared to the Meijer brand knockoff.

Ralph's sells Kroger brands in SoCal.

What's funny... is most of the "knock offs" are made by the name brand companies.

Don't believe me... go to the factories.... hell... in Pennsylvania, there are Potato Chip and Pretzel factories that give you tours... they'll even tell you what "store brand" they're making for.

The profit isn't that big for them, because they split the profit with the store... but Your Stop N' Shop brand Potato Chips that you hate? They're made by Utz.

same factories, but same ingredients and recipe?

Jo-Jos from Trader Joe's are just as good as Oreos if not better, plus during the holidays you can get Peppermint Jo-Jos or Dark Chocolate Peppermint Jo-Jos which are better than sex.
Trader Joe's Honey Nut Cheerio knock off is also way better than the original. I don't think I would be able to tell the difference between the plain ones though.

There will never be a substitute anywhere ever for CheezIts though. Cheese Nips are absolutely vile, and Better Cheddars are pretty good but certainly aren't CheezIts.
