Looking to get my dad a decent to good set of knifes. done some research but its so many different opinions out there.

budget is 100-120. Not necessarily looking to get a "set" but would like to get him some good steak knifes, a chefs knife, pairing knife, and something to sharpen them with to maintain them. and a knife block.

I was looking at Victorinox brand knifes that have good reviews and i've seen mentioned before, but wasn't sure if there were better options out there.

also saw this and while I don't care for the brand, i've read good reviews

I would spend a few extra bucks to get him a small Zwilling J.A. Henckels set (avoid the 'international' stuff). I think if you're going for a full-blown set they're all going to be chinese anyway so just find good reviews for a set that you think looks pretty.

maybe

The Costco sets are the Henkels International. Not the best you can buy, but damned good for the price. Made in Spain, not China.

Maybe they changed? I remember on amazon reviews said they were made in China.

I was eyeing that set myself but I liked the Wusthof set better because they gave a bread knife instead of the santaku. In the end I just bought a few more pieces to my much cheaper Cuisinart set to round it out.

I would say that just get a steel for honing, don't buy any of the blade sharpeners. I have never heard of one doing any good, even the ones marketed by ZJ Henckels or Wusthof.

$27 victorinox 8 inch chef knife
$9 victorinox paring knife
$40 bodum universal knife block
$40 henckels twin steak knife set

I'd also recommend a wusthof or henckels bread knife (the victorinox doesn't have enough weight for a bread knife) but that would add another $40

Henkles have worked well for us. We even got a small set (Carving set I believe) for my parents. Mainly because we were tired of sawing through our steaks when we went over to their shore house, but still.....
