Knees hurt when I run, need help on what to do....

Over the course of this year my knees have been hurting when I run. Around spring time it was my right knee, and now it is my left knee. It starts happening around 1.5 miles into the run/jog.

This is really annoying because I am in decent shape and am 22 years old. I have also run in the past when I was 20 and 21 and this did not happen. I am 6'1" and weigh 162 lbs just to let you know. I am just wondering if it is my diet, age, season , etc.... I will be seeing a doctor about this in the future most likely though.

You: Doctor, when I do *blank* it hurts.

Doctor: Don't do *blank*.

It's simple, you probably shouldn't run as you may have bad knees and it won't help them to aggrivate them early in life, find some nice no impact excercise that won't strain your knees.

Where do you run? Concrete? Jogging trail? Nature trail? Street? You need to avoid hard surfaces that are hard on your knees, like concrete, or if possible, uneven surfaces. (Like jogging through the woods) You might also get some new shoes - go to a running store and have your feet examined (they'll fit you with special shoes and put you on a treadmill to get an idea of what type of shoe you need). I get bad shin splints regardless of the surface I run on, a few friends with the same problem recommended the running store idea.

Unfortunately, you knees may not be able to deal with the stress of running outside. You may have to instead run on a treadmill, or on some similar gym machine which is much less stressful for the knees.

Don't run. I had the same thing start in my early twenties and I just don't run anymore. Use an elliptical machine, bike, etc. instead.

Without a noticable injury, I began feeling quite a bit of pain going down stairs. My doctor said that my meniscus was wearing down. Just the right size, width & cushoning make all the difference when choosing my basketball & running sneakers now.

also i notice that when I run treadmill with an incline, it kills my knees also to so keep it flat if you decide to go the treadmill route.

Stop after 1.49 miles?

Actually, I would go to a sports fitness clinic, and see a professional. Sometimes its as easy as support or shoes, and they will know what you need.

i like when the poster posts a problem, then when questions are asked to help figure out what is going on they don't reply.

anyway, my suggestion is to get a bicycle and ride that. very low stress on the knees.

It's the impact on the knees... try running on the elyptical trainers... same workout, less knee impact.... and you can still run some, just run less.

Take it from me.. bad knees are NOT something to mess around with.

Replace running with swimming!

I think the problem maybe with shoes. You would be surprised how much of a difference a good pair of running shoes can make.

I was busy at work dude, sorry.

Anways I just checked up. I *do* bicycle quite a bit and I use the stairclimbers and elliptical machines at the gym. However, I feel that I need to run every once in a while, like at least once a week. Thats why I asked the question . My running shoes do kind of suck and I may be looking for good ones around christmas time.

Oh yeah, it varies depending on the day where I run, but it is only at two places. I either run indoors in the gym on a kind of rubbery track, or I run in the park on an actual outdoor track (the one with the red rocks.)

you have tendinitus, or at least early signs of it. it's where the joint inside your knee becomes inflamed or something. over time, if you dont let it heal out, you can have knee surgery. i play volleyball, and a couple yrs ago, i had a really bad case of it in my left knee. i was always limping because it was always hurting, so i went to the doc and he said for me to rest it out for a few months. there went the rest of my vball season. he also said that if i didnt rest it out, i could get surgery. it's either drilling 3 holes into my knee, or replacind the joint or something. i obviously sided wtih resting for a few months. it eventually got better, but is still really easy to mess up again. basically, you're going to feel some sort of pain for hte rest of your life, because joints take FOREVER to heal. but ya, wearing a knee brace when doing something athletic really helps and is recommended.

I wouldn't run until you can get a decent pair of running shoes. I used to have the same problem and I was using a really old worn out pair of running shoes. Once I replaced them the knee pain went away.

You might benefit from exercises - do a couple sets of 10-15 reps of a leglift (one at a time) while lying on your back.
