knee went out. Need some ATOT doctor advice

rudeguy

The cartilage and whatever the thing that holds your kneecap in place in my left knee has always been messed up. Today I woke up and it was hurting. By noon the pain was almost to a 10 on the doctor scale thing. Now I'm having problems putting weight on it.

I've taken all the OTC painkillers I dare. What else can I do? My doc can't get me in for a few weeks and I'm not willing to admit that its ER worthy. I have it wrapped right now but I don't dare ice it for fear that the pain will be too much.

HALP?

I'd go to the ER anyway, or at least the clinic, but the clinic might just give you meds, the ER might actually do something or at least escalate it. I hate going to the ER too for non emergencies but sometimes it's the only way to get some movement. Doctor appointments are usually months later so you can't really make an appointment for something happening now.

I did something to the Miniscus this summer, it did not really hurt, but it stopped my knee from being able to bend all the way in both directions. I could not touch my butt with my heal like I normally can, and I could not put it straight. No clue how it happened, woke up like that. I blame my cat, she probably stepped on it in some weird way. 😛 About a month of physio, it's still not 100% right though, I can bend it all the way now, but it still takes more effort. It's weird how these things can happen. I probably need to exercise more. I really need to lay down some drycore in my basement and setup a basic gym area.

No sure there's much you can do besides ice + NSAIDS to relieve pain and swelling OTC.

It might make sense for you to call your local pharmacy to see if there's any other options...

Urgent care is the answer. ER is only for life threatening stuff.

I'm a little shocked your regular doc would schedule you weeks out when you are in so much pain. If (s)he can't get to you then they should at least recommend an urgent care.

Bingo.

I'm shocked that you have to wait weeks to get a primary care appointment. My PCP's practice can almost always get me a same day appointment for something urgent, although it will usually be with someone other than my regular doctor.

My doctor is super busy. He specialises in sports medicine, so I prefer him to his underlings. I didn't make it seem urgent since nothing is in danger of falling off....

Rub some dirt on it, ya fucking nancy! 😛

Call your doc back. Make it sound a bit more urgent...OR, just bypass your regular doctor and go straight to an orthopedist...if that's allowed with your insurance.

My orthopedic surgeon doesn't want to see patients unless it's (a) obviously an emergency-type situation, or (b) the problem has existed for at least 6 weeks. He says that MOST OF THE TIME, the "flare-up" will resolve itself before then. (My knees are all fucked up...I have constant problems with them and will have to have at least one knee-replacement surgery within a few years)

Why not agree to see someone besides that particular doctor in the same practice? Try wearing a brace and see if that helps.

Either alcohol or calling up some buddies with hookups to meds would work. Well, relieve the pain and make you feel good, at least. lulz

For what it's worth, imho, a "10" on the pain scale means, "Doc, this pain is so unbearable that if you tell me I'll have to live with this pain for the rest of my life, and there's nothing that can be done to relieve the pain, then I'd rather be dead."

As mentioned......urgent care. You can get in quickly and you will leave with lortab or some other prescription pain medicine to deal with that pain until you can see your doctor.
