Knee Problems

Lifer
So, for the last two weeks I've had pain on the lateral side of my right knee. It hurts to the touch, as if it was bruised, but there is no redness or swelling. The same area hurts when I walk. It hurts more as the day goes by and if I keep my leg bent or straight for a long time, it will hurt when I move it. Anyone ever had a similar pain or know what it could be.

Oh, I had been doing aerobics prior to it hurting, but it doesn't hurt any more if I work out then when I just walk on it. Ice doesn't help the pain. In fact it just makes my knee stiff and then it hurts more.

I didn't hit it on anything, so I know that it isn't it! 🙂

And for those of you ready to shout out "GO TO THE DOCTOR", I have an appointment tomorrow. I just wanted some input!

Thanks! 🙂

edit: I forgot to add that my knee is popping a lot and occasionally feels like it's not stable!

Update: I went to the doctor today and he said that it was just Bursitis and Tendonitits. He gave me a steroid shot in my knee. He said it should feel better in two weeks at the most. At least it wasn't anything too bad. 😀

I haven't been since the second day it hurt. I thought it was just a pulled muscle, but I don't think that's it anymore.

if it feels like the bone, i'd guess a bruise...if it feels like it's inside then you could have pulled/partially torn a ligament
It feels like the bone, but I can't think of how it could be bruised. I am accident prone, but I haven't hit that area. 😀

Probably just a little inflamed. Doesn't sound like a spur or fluid build up. Doc will prolly x-ray it, find nothing wrong, send you on your way with an anti-inflammatory. Two weeks it will be good as new.

Holy sh! someone else from Alabama! Yeah yeah.... we must be the only two in alabama with internet.....

Ligament damage.

You may need surgery if it is fully torn.

**EDIT**
You said your knee pops and feels loose, and that attempting to move it gives a sharp pain (ligament or tendon damage is more than likely). I discount tendon, because there would be a welt remaining.

Fracture would cause too much pain to walk on more than likely, unless it is a microfracture.

The knee popping and feeling loose, sounds like ligament damage. Or it can be a broken or malformed kneecap. (I broke my kneecap). If that is the case, you will need surgery. Because the bones will shift out of place.

..get a few of those gell ice packs and keep em in the fridge. Put on an elastic knee wrap and load the cold gell packs around your sore knee. Keep the gell packs against your knee for as long as their cold (20 min.or so). Works like F.M. (fing magic).

Please don't listen to anyone's suggestions as to what it might be. There is simply not enough information there to make ANY sort of judgement. There are a lot of reasons for knee pain, and the last thing you need is to start freaking out, before you even had a physical exam.

For now, STAY OFF IT!

Generally, pain is body's way of telling you that something is wrong, so you should listen to it, and avoid walking. If you must walk, get a knee brace, and try to put less weight on that leg.

Aside from that, there is no medical advice to be given before a physical exam and/or CT scan/MRI.

It's good you are getting it looked at. The doctor will also be able to tell you the condition your knees are in. How old are you? My mom just had her knee replaced (Major surgery, but well worth it if needed) and I guess it really hurts (although it's been a few months and the pain has gone way down and she can walk just fine).

ya but amputation is slightly cheaper.

QFT. What you are describing sounds like what I had. Torn ACL, maybe miniscus damage and cartilage damage. If you are lucky it may only be a torn miniscus/cartilage. Chance are if the doctor suspects the same thing he will send you to get an MRI of your knee done. That will verify the type of damage you have. Good luck with it, and keep us updated.

Have your Doc do an MRI on the knee.

More than likely, from what you're saying it's either your ACL or MCL/Meniscus. I've torn both my ACL and MCL/Meniscus, and while stability was more of a factor with the ACL, the popping was always a problem with me for the MCL.

And as far as the popping goes, I still have it almost 2 years after it was supposed to be fully healed. The kneecap has always been lose, and it occasionally will pop out when playing softball, football, or basketball.

Are you back to 100% though? Im just about a year out from my reconstructive surgery and Im struggling to get back to 100%. Wondering if Im ever gonna be able to get there?

Look for a book by Dr. John Sarno called 'The Mindbody Prescription'. It will cure your knee pain as it did for mine.

I agree with Meuge. Only a doctor or MRI will be able to tell what is truly wrong, and that's if there is any damage at all. Probably you just have some irritation or minor cartilage damage.

Generally, a torn ACL can be linked to a specific event like a fall with extreme pain. I highly doubt you would have been able to complete an aerobics exercise without an ACL.

I think the best thing to do with any knee complication is to get a second opinion! Also, that might be a good idea before you have the MRI in case the doctor orders an unnecessary scan. Cause hey! it's just the insurance's money... (only mention that b/c it's happened to me before)

I had the ACL replaced (and a meniscotomy) done over 2 yrs ago, and it is still more painful than it was BEFORE the surgery. Ortho blames it on arthritis, but that doesn't explain all the problems I have. He now says I'll need a full knee replacement within a couple of years, but that I'm not hurting badly enough yet. Gee, thanks I tell him..
On the other hand, the knee is much more stable than it was with the ACL torn completely in 2, and I haven't taken any falls from it like I was. Seems like every time I'd step wrong on a piece of uneven ground, or a rock, the knee would roll out from under me, and down I'd go...blew out a couple of disks in my back from a couple of the falls...adding insult to injury.

OP, definitely get it checked. An X-ray won't show much except bone damage (if any). It will take an MRI or CT scan to show any soft tissue injury.
