I am just thinking out loud here, so bear with me. Let's say I wanted to get a set of the pormedia 4.1's and a set of the 2.1's both at the klipsch site refurbished for total of $250. I'm not sure what all the connections are on these, but would I be able to hook these up to a standard dolby digital/DTS reciever for 6.2 surround sound? I guess the reciever would have to support at least 6 channels or something, but I'm just curious if this would work, i.e. multimedia speakers with a home thater setup (which could be controlled with the reciever's remote control). Anyone have any comments as to whether this would work, and/or whether it would even make sense to do, like would it sound any better than your typical $300-400 Home theater in a box?

Thanks,
JJ

Thats the setup I have. I had 2.1s for a while and picked up 4.1s from the FS forum here. So now I have 6.2s. With my setup, I have the 4.1s hooked up to the front/rear connectors, and the 2.1s on the center/sub connector. Because the center/sub channel sends two signals, the center only plays on one of the 2 speakers.

I have WinDVD setup to send the LFE channel to the speakers, so it gets sent to both the 4.1s and the 2.1s, and the sub's crossover determines where to split it. Both subs are working for me that way. The Matrix scene with the helicopter going down sounds pretty damn good that way.

Im confused why you need 2 subs. I can understand 6.1, but your ears cant arent able to figure out the direction of sounds in the range produced by a sub. Dont know why exactly, but they cant.

I would get the Promedia 5.1s and get the extra sub that they sell. It would be a killer system and probably rival some home audio systems.

6.1, but your ears cant arent able to figure out the direction of sounds in the range produced by a sub. Dont know why exactly, but they cant.

Its because humans have a very hard to localizing very low frequency sound. For stuff like top notch audio equipment and things like large pipe organs they can get very close to producing sounds humans can't even hear, you can just sort of feel/sense them. On another note, those very low frequency sounds (sub 20 or even 10 hz) frequently inspire a certain amount of fear in people. Which is one of the reasons pipe organ music was so popular in church. It allowed them to have passages that would scare people and then some of the fire and brimstone stuff would sink in abit better.

The two subs provide the additional power for a nice punch. The sub on the 5.1s is rated higher than the sub on the 4.1s or the 2.1s.
