Trying to use Klinux ver 2.1 on a dual P2 266 LX chip board with an on board Intel 82557 ? 10/100 Ethernet chip.

I keep getting:

VFS: Cannot open root device 08:05
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:05

I tried it on an identical system with one CPU. Same trouble.
I disabled the on board ethernet and plugged in a Realtek 8019. Same trouble.

Help!

edit- Tried an old Ether Express 16 card same problem...
DLed ver 2.3, hooked up a P100 and the Ether Express...works like a dream, SO I guess it's not me!

Viz,

That was a file system problem in his earlier versions. Did you download it recently, or have you had it for a while? Also, it doesn't support the 8019, but does most of the other Realtek's.

Viz,

I don't think it's a hardware issue. Even on incompatible hardware, it should mount the file system. That occurs fairly early in the process. Perhaps the download on the 2.1 got corrupted, of the floppy disk has a problem.

That is exactly the error that was occuring in earlier versions that I had tried, but the latest has worked with everything I've thrown at it.

Shoot Viz, I'm home now and can't do much for you.

I don't know if the Intel onboard chip would be supported or not.
I'd have to research that, but I don't remember seeing it listed.
But even if it wasn't, Klinux should still boot.
I've had problems with O/Cd floppy controllers, like RC had last night.
I've had problems with old beat up floppys causing a kernel panic error.

Let me D/L 2.1 here at home and see what I can come up with.

I'll be back.

It don't likey Klinux-2.1 or no likey intel onboard ethernet?

I find out one thing, this Linux box here at home has all the stuff on it from building Klinux version 1x.

I could always build him an image with the 2.2.16 kernels.

/me thinks this dialup at home is suck :|

It no likey the NIC. It's an Intel Pro/100 dual server NIC.

EDIT because I was too confusing.:) It boots just fine, just doesn't find the NIC.

It should still boot even if there is no nic.

I D/L it in Linux, and did the "nix" thing to make the disk, I got the exact same kernel panic numbers.
It must be the 2.1 version that isn't right.
I'll pull it form the site for now.

God, I'd hate to try and D/L the 2.2.17 kernel sources here with my stinkin 28.8 dialup at home.

<Edit> Try the 2.1D version, it'll try and find a DHCP server, and fail, but should still boot.
Then you just need to run "netconfig" to setup your own network prams.

Well, crunchers A and B have started. Bwuhaaa

I am getting a little challenged on compatable NICs, so I did have a couple of 3C509Bs for thin net. DLed ver 2.2 and it works!

I'll give your suggestion a try tomorrow KW.

Thanx for the help
