Kilowatt,

I have a question for you. I don't know if it is possible, but I would like to know anyway... :) Is it possible to rediect text output from VGA to COM1 (Console Redirection is the technical term)? It doesn't even have to disable VGA completely, maybe send data to both? I basically would like to connect to KLinux through Hyperterm on Win98 to the KLinux box using a serial cable (or null modem cable)... This way, I don't have to keep switching the monior... Unless some one else has a better solution/idea. :) I believe it is possible to do in some versions of Unix, but I have no idea if it is available in any of the Linx Distro's. Thanks.

I do remember seeing something about that while compiling the kernel.

I'm sure I didn't compilie it in. Sorry.

Would it be possible to add it in for the next re-compile? I don't know how difficult it is. Just curious. Thanks.

Freeze,
There is probably be a little more to it than just compiling it in the kernel.

I don't know for sure what all is required, I've never done that to a Linux box.

<Edit- PS. I have been trying to include telnet, but I think I need to add a user to do that.

I can telnet out of Klinux, but can't telnet into it.

KW-

I hate to add to the throng that is saying 'I wish Klinux would do this' but using a second floppy to add more functionality certainly would not be unwelcome. It appears that reducing the number of supported NICS is quite possible (at least reducing to one release.) The added features that you are looking at will be a welcome, and flipping disks during the boot process to get them would be a small price to pay.

Viz,
I know if I was to go by the "Polls" I could very easy just do one release.
But then I'll get all these people crying that their nic isn't supported.

There will be an A and B release of Klinux-v.3 to cover the nics already supported.

I've listened to everybody's request for stuff, but If they don't like Klinux the way I put it out, they are more than welcome to make their own distro.

I am going to include the option to store your dnetc.ini file to floppy, but I've given up on putting it on the SAME floppy as the Klinux.img bootdisk.

I'm also trying to get telnet to work so you could remote run the Klinux node, I think that would be a usefull addition.

Well, there are already plenty of 1-2 floppy distros out there that will do all that.
They'll even run the dnet client, maybe even run seti, so I'd just be duplacating their efforts.

I built Klinux to just crack RC5, and I think it does a great job of it.
The fact that it uses the same client for OGR is a plus.

I'll spend a couple more days tring to get telnet working, and then release Klinux-v.3, and then I'll stop.
No more new versions.

I'll be working on my "mini beowulf", I've put that off for the last month, while messing with Klinux.

KW,

Thanks for the info. I know you put a lot of effort into this free tool for us. It is greatly appreciated. If you can get telnet to work that would be awesome. If not, then I guess I can just suffer with the method I am using now. :p Thanks a lot.

How are you starting Klinux now?

You can just get it all started, and yank the keyboard out, put it in a different node, and then fire that one up.
You could even put the keyboard back in the original node, and do what ever it is you want to do.

Most people, I think would use a cheap KVM (Keyboard, Video, Mouse) manual "Switch box", that can be had for $30 or less.
Add cables for another $15 or so per node, and you're all set.
You'll only need the cheap VGA cables, not the more expensive SVGA.

If you go that route, make sure all your cables have male to male ends, as the switch box is all female sockets.

This is how my 4 nodes are setup.
Ofcourse, you can get by without it, by just switching the monitor and keyboard over by hand.

Just a quick note that this applies only to manual switch boxes. I learned this the hard way after ordering the same cables in for my digital boxes. On the digitals, the VGA output is male.

Oh, and I LOVE Klinux just the way it is.:D

Good call on the switch boxes Russ, I've never had one of those "fancy" ones. ;)

If I can get telnet working, there will be one more version, at least for two.

Telnet would be a great addition, you could run the dnet client on any node, from any other box.
You could have mutipile Dos or term boxes on one desktop (GUI), tracking/running all the nodes.

Remote administration for Klinux! :D

I actually have a keyboard on the system. I only have to switch the monitor... It's not a huge deal, I have the system about 6 inches away from my main system. :)

I have the floppy in the drive and i plug in the monitor. Once I log in and start the client, I unplug the monitor. I just want to check on it once in a while, to make sure it's ok.

Remote Admin would be cool. :)

I can't really complain about KLinux. I sure am getting my money's worth. :Q And just to clarify, I didn't know we could request features. I was just seeing if this particular feature was implemented. Keep up the good work.

lol. :) For just one node, I don't think I'd bother getting a switch box.

Hey, that's what "Open Source" is all about.
