What do you guys want to put for:

We loan because:

How would you describe your team?

anyone heard of it www.kiva.org

loaning money to entrepreneurs in 3rd world countries. helping them get out of poverty.

your loan gets paid back in a certain amount of time 6 months, etc... there's a risk rating, all stars and you have no worries of getting your money back.

anyway you lend $25 or more if you want for 6 months or so.

they ask you if you want to donate 10% to the foundation. It's optional, so if that holds you back then just don't give the 10% and still lend.

you'll get all your money back anyway.

i think it would be fun to make a team anandtech
kiva teams

Are they able to handle capacity yet? I loaned to them before Oprah got a hold, and when they asked me to re-lend they said they had too much cash and that there was some sort of waitlist to lend cash. Seems to me other charities make more sense when they have more money than they can handle.

I'm on Team Canada already.

You can join both, you just have to choose which group your dollars count to. Mine will be for Canada, but I'll still rep AT!

There, I just put $200 US to start with to a bunch of people in Uganda and Tanzania 🙂 Feeling good, don't care if it ends up pissed in the wind, at least it's money donated in Africa

I wonder what % of the requests are just Nigerian bots

All of these requests are vetted by the local microlending agencies... you can't just sign up for a loan online. It's all done in person.

I like these type of aid schemes more than the free stuff ones.

I mean, certain things it doesn't matter if you provide them for free, such as clean water, electricity, health care - but it's not a good idea to dump free food on a country in bad shape. You completely undercut the market for food, and as these countries' economies are mostly agriculture based you destroy the economy and put unemployment through the roof.

No such thing as a free meal.

Microcredit is a good way to provide aid to the developing world without ruining economies. I'll probably put some cash into this shortly.

Exactly, and this way you also know exactly who you are providing for!

Joined the team. 1275.00 in.

As an engineer, I targeted people trying to set up auto repair, construction, manufacturing shops and that kind of thing.

Whatever gets paid back will go back in. Maybe when I've got more cash I'll expand. It's fun just going through the list, you see people that have already recieved and paid back a couple Kiva loans and it's cool to see how big an impact the program is had - where loan #1 was to start some business, and every loan after that is to expand a successful venture created by the original loan.

I saw this about a month ago but didn't pay any attention to it until now when I was looking for a good way to give back and I think this is gonna be it. As soon as I sell some of the items I have listed in the FS/FT forum, I'll join the group and throw whatever $ I get from the sales of those items into this. I'll also post a note about this on Facebook and tag some friends, hopefully I can get some of them to join in as well. Great idea, IMO!
