Kitty mishap

I work for an animal shelter and my first adoption from here (I have 4 now) was a cat, adopted about a year ago. I got a form letter from costumer service, stating that I was non-compliant and risked "repercussions" because I failed to get my cat spayed, even though I was completely positive that my cat was spayed when I got her.

I called in (not mentioning that I'm an employee, by the way) and got a little bit of sympathy mixed with stern annoyance - they insisted that she was NOT spayed yet and scheduled an appointment.

I took her in yesterday and, after getting a stern talking to from the vet "she's over a year old! It isn't safe to wait this long..," etc. etc., they finally accepted for surgery...

3 hours later they call me, while my cat is under anesthesia, to let me know that they shaved her belly and noticed scars from her previous operation.

Yep, I was right and their paperwork was wrong.... Oye..

This is one of those small yet large organizations where I'm a bit worried about my reputation, as the guy who forgot to get his cat fixed while working at a shelter - should I raise a stink about the experience to my superiors, or just let it go?

Changed title, it was perhaps a bit crude

If you change it to include the line "while they were shaving my kitty" this thread will have over a thousand views.

Yes, you should raise a stink about this. They called and threatened you - who else are they doing that to?

Well, they didn't call me at first - I received a form letter in the mail, with my name and adoption date hand-written in.

They were (rightfully, if I really was that irresponsible) annoyed that I didn't get her spayed and there was a certain "you should know better, staff member!" vibe to the in-person discussions.

So what? You might have taken the animal anywhere to be spayed - how would they know?

That attitude, when they called you, is a great way to discourage people from adopting a second pet, or from recommending your shelter to other possible adopters. They aren't doing the animals any favors by bullying people who have been so kind as to rescue an animal.

You are indeed correct. They are pretty stern around here, people have been rejected for 2nd adoptions if they (like me) appeared on the system as not having their former pets spayed.

A stink shall be raised - I'm fostering a dog right now that I'm surely going to adopt, and wouldn't want that to be jeopardized by a clerical error on their own part.

Last I checked , they weren't supposed to let and animal out for adoption without having done so in the first place.

While I support getting your pets fixed who are they to tell you what you can and can't do with them?

It's part of the agreement you sign for almost any adoption. There is no need to bring more kittens into the world, more than half are put to sleep...out of those that beat those odds a majority never see 'old age' for a cat due to being put outside and never given even an annual vet exam.
