Looking for durability and looks. Price not that important. Please advise.

porcelain will wear better in a flooring application. they are also less porous than ceramic, will not stain as easily, and are more crack resistant.

Everything you never wanted to know about tile.

Personally, I have no preference as I've never seen any tile wear out. My projects generally call for porcelain because it's more expensive.

My biggest concern is the ability of the tile to survive something being dropped on it. Lately my kid dropped ~3lb pyrex dish on our current wood floor. There is a big mark on it.
Now, how would have either tile kind reacted to this?

No tile holds up to impact damage. I think porcelain would probably hold up a bit better overall.
With kids, anything you use is going to get trashed. When my kids were young I put cheap laminate in my kitchen and family room. 4 kids, a black lab and a cat did their worst for 12 years, and the floor didn't look all that bad when I pulled it out and put in bamboo.
I should also note that I'm not a fan of tiled kitchen floors, anything dropped that isn't made of metal breaks and/or chips the floor.
