I still haven't opened mine. But I'm not a big drinker and never had single malt scotch. I figured this was cheap way for me to try. So I wouldn't be able to tell you if it's good or not. But I really enjoyed Johnny Walker Blue. But I know that's blended Scotch and not the same.

I find their small batch 108 proof on par with or slightly superior to wild turkey 101, which a lot of people will quote as a standard. It's not much smoother than something like evan williams or jim beam, but has a bit more flavor.

For a nice, smooth and full flavored bourbon, eagle rare is hard to beat for the price, as are corner creek and basil hayden. Baker's 7 might be my favorite thus far, woodford reserve and just about anything from four roses are right up there with them. I might need to be more discriminating, but they're all so delicious!

I don't know if that's what I had, because I believe what I had was 90 proof.

Personally I really like the Wild Turkey flavor profile, and Wild Turkey Rare Breed is my go-to, with Wild Turkey 101 for mixing. I agree Eagle Rare is quite good for the money too, as is Elmer T. Lee.

Mm...sweet, delicious Knob Creek. How much does it go for there?

I think it's around $40 for a 1.75L. Gentleman Jack is $45.

As a (related) aside, I recently had a remarkable bourbon experience.

A few years ago I bought my father a bottle of 16-year-old A.H. Hirsch Reserve, which some people were calling the best bourbon ever made. I had read the distillery had closed and prices were climbing as the supply dwindled. I paid about $125 for it.

Although I had visited him a few times since then (he lives halfway across the country), we had never cracked it open, and he was waiting for me to open it. In the meantime, an A.H. Hirsch-branded whiskey had hit the market and didn't blow me away, so I figured the cachet of the Hirsch might be gone.

I went out to his house for Thanksgiving this year and we opened it. It was just extraordinary, with a level of complexity and layered flavor unlike any whiskey I've ever had (and I have had a lot).

I Googled it and learned that yes, the distillery (the Michter's distillery) really did close, in 1974. The newer AH Hirsch products are something different. Michter's was the first licensed distillery in the United States, and the last copper pot distillery. The whiskey is now so beloved that an entire book has been written about it - http://www.amazon.com/dp/B008076O6E - and it sells, when it can be found, for $500+ per bottle! Now I wish I had bought ten bottles when it was $125.

Costco also has Bulleit handles on sale this week for $29.99 -

I love the rye they produce and find it better than most bourbons. Not a fan of makers Mark, I quite like Jim Beam Black 8yr, JD is too sweet.
