On the Sticky, this is listed as one of the "Best to get if you don't have TRIM support", ie, if you have Windows XP.

Newegg is having a sale on the 64GB version of this, so I'm wondering exactly how good/bad is this one? It says on Newegg that this does support TRIM, even though the sticky listed it as one of the best SSDs for people without TRIM support? Is there a deeper story on this one? Newegg has it $115 before rebate(already not too bad) and $80 after rebate. I do have Windows 7, and it says it supports TRIM, so anyone familiar with this model?

don't get confused
the sticky talks about the Kingston SSDNow V+100 (Toshiba T6UG1XBG, same as Macbook Air), well it is just a '+' but a huge difference comparing the controllers the V100 uses a JMF618 (that one can deal with Toshiba Nand), it is basically the same as the JMF612 (that can handle Samsung Nand) yes it will be trimmed using W7, but it does not have the efficient garbage collection of the V+100, if you are looking to use it with XP, Vista or Mac OS.

Anand mentions the Kingston confusion in his review of the SSDNow V+100

Ah now I get it...the "V100" uses the Jmicron 618 controller and that makes it on the sticky as one of the "not as good, only get if it's super cheap" grade.

Is garbage collection the only major shortcoming? Or put another way...is $80 after rebate enough to justify it? I'd be coming from a slow HDD.

$80 for the 64GB version????
that's $1,25 a GB, a heck of a good deal, I thought we will not see any such deals (or $ to GB ratios) until Q3-Q4

you should be using W7 though

I would need to pay $50 more (in Germany)

I do have Win 7, it's just that the sticky relegates that controller to the 2nd class but still OK if it's cheap bin/. Interestingly they are not having lower prices on the other V100 models(like the 128GB), just the 64 GB version.

i got the Kingston V100 64GB from Buy.com for $75AR ($85AR since i get taxed in CA). It runs hot in my laptop, it's constantly around 45-48C cmpared to 38C with my 5400rpm HDD, so i'm returning it and getting something that'll run cooler. Besides, I didn't notice much of a performance increase while web browsing either, but the boot time was insanely fast and noticeable. I thought for $85, it would be good, but since I use mine in the laptop, i want something not as hot. If i had cooling in the desktop, it would be a no-brainer to use the V100 until something better and cheaper comes out in the next few months.

yeah i have the same problem, i think my drive is the slightly older model kingston, SNV425, it runs ~45C idle and heats up my laptop rather badly.
i have to assume the heat is wasted battery power also.

In a DTR size laptop even this might not be a problem but mine is pretty thin and light

acer 5534, i think ~5.2 lbs and ~1.2" thick

for a desktop it should be fine

Damn, from Buy.com the 128GB version is only $135. That's $1.05 per gig! That's getting pretty crazy, hopefully we see more of the stuff from more vendors.
