Kingston Releases SSDNow V200 Series

CLIFFS
JMicron JMF66x (?) controller
SATA 6Gbps
260-300Mbps reads depending on capacity
100-230Mbps writes depending on capacity

Not earth shattering, but Kingston V-series drives (when on sale/rebated) can be the cheapest drives on the market.

SATA 6Gbps but performs at 3Gbps level.

Not quite. SATA 3Gbps can only sustain around 285Mbps, so if the 128GB/256GB drives can sustain 300Mbps, putting it on a SATA 3Gbps controller would actually slow down performance (however little).

pass, unless they start selling 128gb drives for $80

Well that's the thing. Their V-series have often been the cheapest drives on the market.

Unless they drop the upfront price to $75 for the 64GB model and $140-150 for the 128GB model there's not much point in these.

Picked up a 64GB and 96GB V100 drive with the rebates out awhile back, brought the prices down to ~$1/GB. Don't see any reason to pick these up unless they come down to roughly the same price. I can't imagine for the average user there would be any noticeable difference in the V100 vs V200.

Thanks for the news. I hope the V200 series will have a more simplified lineup. Right now there is the V, V100, V+100, V+180, and among them there are variations in part numbers.

One can hope. :\

The 128GB drive is $144 at NCIX right now... I think I'll pick one of these up! Give that controller a try 😱

$1.13/GB is getting better!

Installed the Kingston SSDNow V200 128GB drive this weekend...

As with everyone else that upgrades from a 7200RPM drive to SSD, I am blown away.

Blazing fast, setup was rediculously easy. Fresh installation of Win7 after changing BIOS to AHCI.

The thing that blows me away the most:

Steam opens faster than windows can recognize my hardwired internet! Steam always opens and says "Steam cannot connect to the Steam servers" on the first try. I check the internet and it works, and it always connects when I try, but when it opens by itself the damn computer hasn't even connected to the internet yet! Now THAT'S fast!
