The only reason shop.kingston.com is cheaper is the promo code being used. If you go in directly, the price is the same as through www.kingston.com.

One thing I found interesting is that once I went to checkout, it offered me a list of retailers (including Kingston's store) to complete my order. The others all charged shipping, so I went through Kingston to complete my order.

Should arrive today, can't wait!

FYI for those who are merely curious: there was a "Boost" promo code included in a limited number of Everquest: Evolution boxes. I bought EQ: Evolutions when it came out and was happily amazed that inside was a card with a code # and the link to this offer. It offers up to 40% of MSRP of pretty much their entire line of memory. The "Boost" special according to my card runs until March 1, 2004.

thanks exists for this link. was looking for another stick to go dual channel and saved $10 bucks or so cause of you. if you were here right now i'd buy ya a drink with some of that. cheers

You have to go through the original link, use the "Find Memory" link, do a search on "DDR PC3200".

pick "KHX3200AK2/512" - 512MB Kit HyperX DDR 400MHz 2-3-2-6-1.
Regular price is $150 - now $105.

Thanks for the heads up.

It's cheaper to buy two of the same single piece of memory than the kit.

That may be true, but with the kit you're guaranteed a matching set. Not so if you purchase two individual sticks.

Seems like a money maker to me. Dual channel is not that hard to implement. It's very unlikely that if you order two pieces of the exact same memory that there will be any significant difference that would mess up dual channel.

There were reports on FW about people purchasing the Hyperx instore at BB and the guy at the desk handing him two totally different revisions...

That's what I did. Don't let the kid behind the counter just hand you the first two packages he comes to. I had mixed codes on the first try. I asked for one more box (he looked at me like I was nutz) and got a match.

Yes, this "boost" promo is a good one (kingston.com/boost describes it), but there's another at kingston.com/x. Now, the "boost" promo brings you to URL's ending in "Promo=boost" as described in earlier messages. Does anyone know what the URL's look like for the other one? The obvious, "Promo=x" doesn't work. Thanks.

About the matched pair thing, if even Crucial has no such concept as buying memory in a pair "kit," how important could it be?

Also, can someone explain what specific purpose HyperX serves over ValueRAM? Is it just as compatible? It's not listed on their site when you search by motherboard, for example, so I have to wonder.

Meanwhile, Crucial memory keeps going up.

Couple quickie differences:

1) HyperX memory has a heat spreader on their modules. Could help prevent hotspots on the memory in case you happen to OC. In most cases its just cosmetically pretty.

2) Beter latency and more aggressive timings available on the HyperX.

Basically if you don't plan to OC, really there isn't much advantage on the HyperX except for slightly better latency. In real world use, thats really not noticeable in terms of performance.

Eck, Had to pay $7 tax, making my matched pair 107, still a good deal, but not as hot as before (goes for 110 at newegg)
