Kingston HyperX 3200 unable to do 2,2,2,6 as advertised? (revised: advertised to do 2,3,2,6 and still doesn't work)

I recently built a machine on an NF2Ultra Xpc (sn45g) platform using a 2500+ Barton and 512 MB Kingston HyperX PC3200. The idea was to run the 2500 at 2.2ghz as many have been able to do.

Anyway, I set everything up, default voltages at a 400mhz FSB, and the timings at 2 2 2 6 as advertised, and I could boot, but prime95 would fail after a minute or less every time.

I tried a lot of things, increasing core voltage, reducing the multiplier, and got nowhere. Finally I tried other timings and got it to work at 2.5 3 3 8.

Anyway, my question is, does anyone know why, any ideas? Should I RMA the memory, or try something else?

Oh... Ummm... yeah, nevermind.

Note to self: never ask for help on a problem unless you've tried to solve it AFTER morning coffee.

Thanks, I'll try that this evening... if that works I'll be mighty happy. 2,3,2,6 still ain't bad.

Tried it at 2,3,2,6... still can only handle Prime95 for 8 minutes. An improvement, but not good enough. What kind of performance hit am I taking at 2.5,3,3,8?? What should I do? It says it should work.

Have you increased the VDIMM? If not, bump it up a notch at a time and test it until you hit 2.8V. (Which is acceptable)

EDIT: Also run Memtest86 to see if you have errors....

Thanks for all the help memtest86 reported no errors, so I upped the voltage, but still no luck. I've got timings of 2,3,3,7 now after some fiddling. An improvement, and it's running prime95 now into its third hour. This suits my purposes, but should I be upset that I can't seem to get appropriate timings?

If you had P4 setup I wouldnt worry about it, but the athlons like tight timings and I wouldnt find it acceptable. If you bought it B&M at like BB or something I would take it back, they wont have any way of testing it, so they will give you new ones or a refund which you could buy good memory with. Is that 512MB in two 256mb sticks? and if so was it a dual channel pair? It does make a difference or people like corsair wouldnt test for DC compatability.

Yeah, it's two 256MB sticks, and yes, they were purchased as a dual channel pair. Unfortunately, however, they were purchased online and would require an RMA. I honestly don't know if its BH-5 or CH-5, but can't seem to manage either of those timings.🙁

One additional question, why is it that my multiplier settings jump from 11 to 13? I'd like to try 11.5 on the chip. Is that just the board in the shuttle or what?

Thats a new one on me, it would just be a bios or hardware issue that you can only hope they fix.

Running DC often requires lesser timings, depends on mobo. 2-3-3-7 you won't notice in any real use, and probably not even in synthetic benches. It's when you have to drop it to 2.5-3-3-8 or so it gets annoying.

Yeah, I can't say I'm ever really likely to notice the performance hit. I'm getting good scores in the benchmarks that count for its typical use as a HTPC for my monivision (5119 in 3DMark2003 w/ my softmodded 9500np). I guess it's just frustrating that I got slightly less than I expected. Overall it's still a hell of a machine for the price that I paid, considering all of the overclocks & unlocks.... and I love the SFF thing. I just wish my monivison would get there so I could do some gaming on 32" of 16:9 1280x720p goodness 😀

IIRC, that was fixed in a later revision of the BIOS. Time to update...

BTW, as for the timings, although they aren't exactly what you would like, I think you should lose no more than 200 3DMarks (2001SE) with those timings.
