Same price at amazon now, too. It is a good price, and very well reviewed on amazon. Think I will buy one.

EDIT: some recent reviews on amazon paint a nasty picture of performance issues in subsequent releases with this drive. I am not sure whether those are legitimate or not but there are several concerning posts.

I bought one of these in October of last year and it was only performing at half the rated speed. I blamed it on the current firmware but Kingston thinks otherwise. Other than the sluggish speed, it was reliable.

Supposedly there are two different factories making these drives. One is Chinese and I think the other is Taiwan? The Chinese versions are seemingly having some issues on the newer firmware. I have had a Chinese version for almost a year and its fine. Its also in a really junky $200 refurb Lenovo so unless I run benchmarks I don't have any clue if its performing at its rated speed. It was when I purchased it.

I've read too much bad stuff about this to feel comfortable with it. Although the internet has a habit of creating a false reality out of myth (e.g. one person says something and it becomes a ridiculous legend), there are a lot of people who've run benchmarks on this thing and it's just not performing very well. It looks like there may have been a change in memory in the units and although they still perform to the specs that Kingston uses, their specs may not be a great representation of real world, and more real world oriented bench marks are not doing great.

EDIT: as awful as rebates are I just got the Samsung Evo 840 120GB for $104 shipped - $30 in two rebates, which both expire tonight at midnight, from tigerdirect. This puts it a few bucks above the kingston but seems to be more consistently lauded.

Going to try to get a refund from Amazon.

Heard they started to put asynchronous nand on this model, which won't be fixed by a firmware upgrade.

I've been tempted to return mine unopened but I'll likely use it in a test laptop, nothing for serious storage/use.

Thats why I bought the 240gig model a couple weeks ago. I have an older laptop running an 80gig 5400rpm drive and since it's only SATA 1.5 the Kingston will make a nice improvement.

If I was getting this for a newer machine with SATA3 I would probably return it for something better because it won't even come close to reaching its advertised speeds.
