Maybe I could have played the original better, but I played a mage on hard and higher magic was essential. As a warrior on normal in AP I find that stone skin, healing, resurrection, dispel, and trap are the only spells I use (I haven't found phantom yet ; pain mirror is very rarely useful; and mana ball is better than calm rage). Avenging Angel simply costs too much mana and stone skin is better than the one that refund mana when your tank gets attacked.

^ right, my notes were from playing as a mage where you have much smaller armies but much higher spell damage than a warrior.

As a mage you can't afford to slug it out troop-to-troop as much since the enemy will often be much stronger.

Also, I mostly used Calm Rage in boss battles (giant creatures like Driller, not heroes) where you aren't allowed to summon your dragon.

Tip: cross the bridge between Verona and Monterro, there's something interesting along the way.

If you're playing as a mage, there's a house by the bridge with an interesting guy there.

After crossing by bridge You might also try going to Monerro by boat, but you'll need to dodge a ship that's probably too tough for you right now. If you can do that, there is loot, banners, weaker enemies. along the coast.

Also, if you have the map to Eton by now, there's a shop along the coast that in my game sold green dragons. If you heal them as needed they take a lot of punishment without dying.

My mid-game fighting force after switching away from Jim as my companion:
Archmages, Inquisitors, Paladins, Horsemen, Emerald Dragons. Also, if you have enough of them, Inquisitors can resurrect a dragon (unlike the resurrection spell which only works for level 1-4 troops)

I couldn't find a way across that bridge....I thought I needed to get through the castle?

or maybe I forgot that I can walk around it on the other side of the island and sneak up that way?

I'll have to go back and look at it again, I guess.

don't know when that will happen, though. I have recently succumbed to a nefarious Sins of a Solar Empire addiction and I blame Whipper Snapper.

I do not know how or when I will be able to quench that.

For when you escape back to KBAP:

You reach the bridge by following paths that go around / behind the central castle with the false king. You have to do it on land, not with a ship.

Also, there are 2 other castles on Verona "behind" the main one, along with some wandering enemies. That all should help you level up a bit. But you might want to avoid the castles until after you re-stock your paladins.

The main castle on Verona was the next-to-last battle for me, the false king is level 46 with a strong army.

What I'm finding as a mage is you have to go between the islands looking for what you can win now and what you need to come back to later. For example a very strong mob without a hero vs. a strong one with hero at your own level or below.

The minimum difficulty goes up with each island but you can still dodge the warships and nibble around the edges of a new island to take out the weakest armies. You can also sneak around to grab some banners and crystals.

The overall difficulty does seem higher than The Legend to me at least.

Also: Paladins are your friend for no-loss victories. With Paladins and Inquisitors you have two troops that can resurrect.

I concur with this.

Playing KB:AP (can't get Legend to run) with Orc Mission as a mage and am still going back and forth between the first 3 islands to find fights I can win. Game is bloody tough, even at Normal, but man I am addicted. I'm starting to have dreams about the game. Why didn't I hear about this game sooner?

Warning: When you get the axe of the elements beware that the end product differs based on what element you touch it to first.

Lighting: +5 attack, +10%crit hit, +20% power to spell 'lightning'
Ice: +7 defence; Leve; 1-3 dwarves freeze their enemies preventing counterattacks, +10% physical dmg resistance to dwarves
Wind: +5 attack, + 1 to speed and initiative of all dwarves

I lost three days of play correcting this =(

^ (details for Monterro weapon quest)

I made that mistake too, but decided to live with it since I was using a mage staff as my primary weapon with a dragon slayer sword as a backup.

It was disappointing to get the wind one though, since I don't use dwarves.

i plowed through Legend always using a troop of dwarf alchemists and often a troop of cannoneers. The alchemists were great for whittling down undead with holy water and once they close in, can do some serious damage to a line of three troops if they are positioned properly using their normal attack.

I avoided the dwarf-only items, though.

I got Ice the first time and I don't have any dwarves in my army... ugg. Needless to say I got lightning the second time.
