I've been thinking about this scene for a while, and I'm still confused as to precisely what happens to Roy's hand when it's forced into the ball return device. Is it:

(a) severed;
(b) ground up;
(c) crushed in the gears; or
(d) something I haven't considered?

EDIT: Another question: Why didn't Roy sue the people who cut off his hand?

i think it was ground up. i have worked at a bowling alley, and sometimes the only way to get the ball out was to get your hand in there and try to dislodge. however, also being a bowler, i never liked that movie. it was really funny, but the bowling equipment he was not historically accurate. he was using a ball in the 70s that wasnt made until the 90s. if you people can pick on stuff like that in science-type movies, then damn it i can do it with bowling.

None of the above.

It was assumed into Hollywood heaven. To the lay person, they don't know the innerworkings of a ball return. Maybe that belt in there is actually sandpaper and maybe it has teeth and blades. Or maybe a monster lives inside it.

In short, you'd have to try extremely hard all day to get a small scrape from a ball return, but most people will believe it if it's in a movie.
