Those chimney pots dont cool the VRM's, if fact they look bare which has got to be worse....Ill be surprised if the cards dont fail!

These guys are very aware of those things, they direct high speed fans at the ram and the VRM's , something that is not practical or possible in users home cases.
Which is why manufacturers put heat sinks on them, in some cases.

+1.
I don't care how fast is the high speed fan is, without good heat spreader / heatsing, it dont do jack...

I will LOL if their setup scores lower than 2 x 6990s in quadfire at 880MHz.

I was thinking the same thing....But then was thinking maybe the pots might just chill the whole pcb.

Kinda strange not a single result yet. I don't think these guys go for the full 20 game reviews....More like the suicide runs!

I dont think it would b any faster than quad sli 580s. Pcm81, what do you get in 3dmark11 extreme?

3DMv11 is X5000 marks, cant remember exact number, at work now... This is in quad fire at 830MHz on air.

EDIT:
At sock 6990 clocks i get X3700 for 2x6990 in CF when my 980X is at stock 26 multiplier

BUT

With 980X with multiplier at 28, i get X5475 for 2x 6990s in CF... I have a feeling they can do more in I OC my 980x....

You guys obviously don't know who Vince or TiN, or Shammy or AndreYang are. These guys are well experienced in extreme subzero clocking and cooling, and know exactly what parts of the card need to be covered or cooled with what. They have churned out loads of WR.

I know they are eperience and they know what needs to be covered, however their knowledge does not compensate for low quality/power VRMs.

He's aware of the exploding issue.

He's already stated on his website that the VRM circuitry on the 590 is inadequate for overclocking and he's going to be 'beefing' it up so it will be able to handle the overclocks.

Holy crap thats insane looking. I can't wait for the results and the pics of the completed system. Just wish I had that much money to spend on a setup just to destroy it in order to achieve awesome benchmarks. Still, it will be cool to see what the hardware is capable of when pushed to it's max.

Have you seen any of TiN's zombie cards? He will often hack up old/dead cards for their VRMs.

http://kingpincooling.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1095 is an example of what he did with a dead radeon 2900xt.

Isnt that cheating? I mean if you have to put extra components onto the card to get it running at said overclocking speeds, its no longer the orginal card is it?

***edit

woah.... that dude must be like a electronic enegineer or something.
Crazy things he does with mods ect and all the tech stuff.

Its not cheating, its called free R&D for non-reference design manufacturers...

We don't care much for experience, knowledge, or accomplishments around here. Just look at the W1zzrd is a retard/doesn't know what he's doing comments that have flown the last few days. ;)

For some reason I never get too excited about the liquid nitrogen/helium runs. It's not that it isn't impressive, the amount of work and know-how they take. But I guess if it isn't something I can run at home if I wanted, it just doesn't do it for me. That's not to say what they are doing is dumb or worthless, it just doesn't get my nerdage flowing like you would think it would. But, to each their own.

There are additional gotchas to consider even with LN. The modern cards are VERY powerful beast, in thermal sense. So while LN can cool things to very very low temperatures we are now getting to the point where the surface area of the chip is just too small to transfer all the heat through evn to a liquid nitrogen coolant.

Q=A*q*dT where Q is heat source, q is the transmission/conduction coefficient, A is area and dT is change in temperature. dT is mch higher with LN than it is with air or water. Little q is higher than with air but is lowr than with water, while A is the size of the die, or from the looks of their heat sinks the surface area of the internal chaimber where LN is stred.

What this all MOMBO-JUMBO means is that with higher power GPU the dT will have to be also higher assuming the "A" stayed the same. So, the GF110 will not actually be at LN evaporating temperatures...

This will still be THE BEST performance that can be squized from non-reference 590. I am very curious to see the results.

My respect to this guy! If he can fix the GTX590 issue then he has definitely put the engineers at nvidia to shame lol.. looking forward to his benchmarks!

Do you have a link to this? I would be interested in reading.

EDIT: NM, found it.

Quick update. He is using 10x 6pin power connectors on 590. That's 750W of power...

I was thinking whats the point of this if you can only get the reference power into the GPU...however, adding power circuity sounds cool...wonder what these card can really do with unlimited power and OTT cooling?

Before you post about an article, read it, thanks ?

The guy explicitly said he was going to change those --

And as much as I hate the reference 590, if there are no bits that suck that can't be changed, this will be the 590 that ought have been, @ 1 kilowatt+.

Although .. the card was designed for 350watts, exploded under 450watts... there may be too much stuff to change on the PCB to reach that 1 kilowatt.

It seems he's changing the original VRM's so the cards don't die when he tries to overclock them. Wish we could all do that!

Those are "big" components, it's still relatively doable ;) and it does void your warranty. better wait for an upgraded PCB from some vendor

hmmm.. wonder what cpu they're going to use for it... may as well go balls to walls and OC an SB to 5.5ghz to drive them while he's at it :D
