I have a question that nobody thus far has been able to answer directly.

What is so fun about swinging a giant key around and killing the same little black blob things over and over for hours?

Heh, I thought so too. But uhh...it appears that people like the story (?) and maybe the combat system with doing things in real time so you gotta be quick on your feet (or should I say fingers!).

BTW, I really hate any game with Disney in it!

I'm curious to try it mainly because I'm a fan of The Nightmare Before Christmas and Jack Skellington makes an appearance.

Gameplay is really boring, but the story is what sucks you in. I honestly don't care about the characters, they can all burn in hell for all I care.

Because it's a combination of many (younger or otherwise) gamers favorite things

Disney
Japanese Styles and Culture
Japanese Innovation (like the combat system)

Haven't actually played it, don't really wanna....

The same could be said for just about any game ever made. Specifically Zelda, any shooter, and the Diablo series. Something is just there that makes you keep playing.

story is great, cameos are great, battle system was "innovative" at its time, lengthy game.

plus, its disney with final fantasy mixed in. its a weird combo ill give you that, but it definitely works (worked).

It has flawless disney character voice overs. The best disney game ever made and it is a team up with Square Enix, one of the best RPG developers to ever exist. What more do I have to say? The combat is pretty fun, it doesn't compare to devil may cry, but it is usually more fun than say, traditional RPG combat. And when you compare it to a traditional RPG, it excels in most every category. What was the problem again?

The first one wasn't too bad, but the second game was just dull. KH2 felt more like watching a movie and getting to interact sometimes rather than playing a game. So it was pretty much like Square's answer to Xenosaga. The first game probably excels well because of the story and how well it flows. Also, for the FF fan, there are different little goodies that you may enjoy. Such as fighting Sephiroth in the Colliseum (that fight takes forever too).

The problem is that combat is nothing more (at least in the 5 hours I put into it) than swinging a giant key around at the same black blobs over and over. What was innovative about that again?

Heh, yeah, I thought it was pretty boring just hacking away at black blobs...

Although some FF characters were cool, I just didn't like Disney. It just pissed me off...

BTW, did anyone notice that Kari in KH1 had a "flat" chest whereas in KH2, you can see the "curvature" of her breasts?* :p

*No, I am not perverted. Just trying to say something about Disney...

Also notice that Sora is older, and so is Kari? Time went by as they made the game, so they made the game to show aging.

You could say that about so many RPGs that it isn't even funny.

It's true, there are a lot of RPG's with not a lot of depth in the battle system. Alundra was pretty dull, so was Brave Fencer Musashi, but the thing is I never heard anyone rant and rave about those games like they do with KH.

That is because most RPGs have sucky battle systems. So when people rant and rave, they are ranting and raving about the story and characters. Which are of exceptional quality in KH1 and 2. KH1 also has some really hard battles in it while KH2 has a better gummi ship system.

If you've never seen the optional boss fights, youtube them some day, especially the japaneese only battle. The clocktower phantom and desert optional bosses are equally awesome. But Sephiroth took the cake.

The main amount of the game is fairly dull. Yea beating the heartless over and over is slightly annoying. For me it was the storyline, and the boss battles. Once you got into the reaction commands, the boss battles were amazing to play. It had a very God Of War feel to it. Especially the last battle.

It definitely is not without its flaws, but it is a well crafted game.

Did anyone else dislike the reaction commands in games like KH2 and God of War? To me, it made the boss fights feel more like a mini-game than a boss fight and took away strategy for simply reacting to button images on your screen :p.

The KH2 reaction commands are crap. A big problem with them is that you can mash the key without penalty, almost impossible to miss them. They are done better in God of War and RE4.

Life is choices - if you don't like something, just move on. Ranting is silly.

I never played the first KH, but I loved KH2 (except for the Little Mermaid stuff, that was just awful).

I liked all of the side games and how you go through the different scenarios, plus the incorporation of all the characters and storylines from the movies I watched when I was younger.

Sure the gameplay was a little stunted, and things overall were pretty easy, but I definitely had fun playing it.
