Someone is reading way too much into my remarks.

Did I say I hate games today? Of course I didn't. I made the remark "They don't make them like they used to" and then we have PimpJuice getting his dander ruffled.

Heck, even EA made good games back in the 80s (Adventure Construction Set, anyone?).

I was referring to the statement that I quoted where Tristicus said they make games better now and you replied with:

If "Call of Duty #243," "Modern Warfare in Space," and "Rehashed Madden 2011" is what you consider "better," I feel for you.

Maybe I read into it too much, but you come across as a hater. You are inferring that the recent CoD games are crap. They might not be as original as you would like but that doesn't mean they're shit.

Sorry, I just get annoyed but people holding onto the past yet feel the need to hate on everything else.

Doesn't make kinect any less shitty, just shows that most people have horrible taste.

Those who hate on it crack me up. I own one, and while I wouldn't buy it at the price it's at currently (it was given to me), it's a hell of a good time. There are times for hardcore games like CoD, Bad Company, Forza, Mass Effect, etc. but a bunch of drunk people playing Dance Central on the Kinect is awesome. The potential is enormous and it's just fun.

Even though I don't consider it a hardcore peripheral, it has the potential for that in the future. It won't replace the controller in those games, but I feel like it can augment it like this.

So stop hating, at this rate it's a financial success and we should all hope that it grows as a technological success.

Why would I hope that a shitty ineffective technology becomes a success? It should be erased from the earth. It is a terrible input device, and makes the Wii seem as precise a kb+m. At least the Wii has some actually decent titles too, which Kinect will never, ever have.

I would rather actually DANCE with a bunch of drunk people that play dance central using a shitty input device, even if you are too drunk to notice.

Also
>Cod, Bad Company, Forza, Mass Effect
>"hardcore"

I now find your opinion completely invalid.

It was hardcore in comparison to the "casual market" we are discussing. I'm more about strategy games on the PC honestly. Civ, Alpha Centauri, some Starcraft, AoE, a few RPG's like NwN, although Battlefield 1942 was my fav FPS of all time (DC mod of course).

Yes, you can just dance with a bunch of drunk people, but this adds a competitive factor and was an absolute blast. Also, the Wii could never handle a game like Dance Central.

I'm pretty sure you could have a great time playing Kinect and would still say it sucks,
like he said earlier

Yes, you can just dance with a bunch of drunk people, but that's not playing a game, which is what we wanted to do.

I'm pretty sure even if you weren't having that much fun you would ignore the obvious flaws to convince yourself that you are.

I don't let the name of "Micrososft" and the veil of "fun" act as an excuse for terrible technology and a shitty lineup.

Also, when I play video games with other people, usually we want to actually play a video game. And usually we would prefer a competent input device.

There are a lot of fun social games other than things like Dance Central. If I wanted to dance, I'd go to a party and dance. If I want to play a video with some people, I'll play one that is actually good using a decent input device. 😉

Have you played the game we're discussing... even once? You keep going on about the flaws as if it was only accurate 25% of the time. I can only think of twice in 2-3 hours of play that we had a real issue with detection, and neither significantly impacted the game.

No, you see the name Microsoft and a system targeted toward "fun" as a reason to call it a terrible technology and a shitty lineup.

Yup. Friend has kinect, saw/played a bunch of different titles, walked away completely unimpressed.

I have no problems with Microsoft and "fun". I do, after all, have an Xbox and a Wii (with encompass Microsoft and fun respectively). I have a problem with terrible technology because it is terrible, and no other reason.

:hmm:

I know right?

The Wii doesn't have the best input control either, and I've complained about it numerous times. The biggest flaw of the Wii IS its less accurate input device. But I enjoy the top-quality titles that the Wii has, and most of these don't have control issues anyway (by avoiding motion controls)

Either way, the Wiimote is still way more accurate and efficient as an input device than Kinect, and has decent titles, which Kinect doesn't.

However, let's agree to just disagree, as I doubt you'll stop loving kinect and I'll stop thinking it is shit. Don't want to keep clogging the thread 😉

Developers, developers, developers, developers!

I'm sure there's a studio talented enough to do some pretty creative things we haven't seen yet with Kinect.

the tech itself isn't terrible, it just doesn't translate well into a well rounded gaming platform.
you NEED buttons for most games.

You keep bringing up this dancing game like it invented dancing. News flash, people have fun dancing.

Thats the kinect.

Just like the HD drive, xbox owners will once again be burned by Microsoft's horrible hardware choices, and them trying to be different. There's a reason why Nintendo designed the Wii controller, and a reason why Sony copied it.

Microsoft will release a technology similar to Wii and move once it's all said and done.

I wonder when people like yourself will quit hanging on to the flawed argument that Microsoft somehow screws over consumers with the hard drive. It gives choice and allows people a cheaper alternative at the expense of something that's not really needed to enjoy the system.

Pretty sure he meant HD-DVD.

Microsoft's Kinect has A LOT more going for it over Sony's Move. It may not be as accurate, but it is accurate enough. It also has it's advantages: no controller (VERY cool and refreshing) and also has the ability to track the entire body which the Wii and the Wii Plus (AKA Sony's Move) can't do. And if I were to give a prediction, I think MS's Kinect will do better than Sony's Move.

Did virtually nothing for Microsoft's stock unfortunately... (Previous buyer, waiting to go back in.)

Accuracy counts.

Refreshing isn't good. Being able to do everything by voice on my computer might be cool and refreshing change of pace over the mouse, but it doesn't mean it's any better, or on some cases, 50 orders of magnitude worse.

The eyetoy can in fact track the whole body. Not in the way of Kinect, but there are still games for the eyetoy that use whole body movement.

I'm not too into any of the motion things, but I do find Kinect more exciting. Just look at all the interesting things people have hacked it to do over the last couple weeks. You can bet the motion tech in Kinect will only get refined to be quicker, more responsive, wider FOV, etc.

Like everything it's going to come down to the software for all the platforms.

It counts, but not as much as you'd think. After all, the Wii's controls aren't that accurate, but that didn't keep Nintendo from slapping around the competition. Again, IMO the accuracy is "good enough" for what type of games this is made for AND it offers something new, not a rehash of a successful product. The ability to have someone just jump in and start playing is a HUGE benefit for these types of games. No swapping controls, no making sure there are enough controllers for everyone, no explaining how to use the controllers to a guest, no making sure everyone's controller straps are on, just jump in and play. If someone is more serious about gaming and wants super precise controls, they can just pick up a game pad and play a regular 360 game.

the kinect is generating HUGE buzz. people are warmed to the idea of motion controlling now thanks to wii, and they see kinect as the ultimate controller. fun party toy too.

This thread reminds me why I rarely step into the console forums - what is it about consoles that breed hating and fanboyism? Kinect is shit tons of fun. I'm not gonna buy one but I'll visit mates who have them and play for hours. Kinect > hating.

This place is a lot tamer than most CG forums, mostly because the average age here is higher.

Oh and for the Kinect haters, how can you hate something that enables this:

I'd like to see PS Move do that one 😉

They're so different that I'm not even going to put them in the same category, even though they're both "motion control" products. There are plenty of games types that the Kinect just can't do because it's not quite accurate enough, and your body can't replicate as many button presses as needed. It's great for some games where you basically just use your body like IRL, but the Move has the triggers and buttons for other game types.
