kindle or tablet???

My wife is a big book reader and has since been wanting a kindle.

Should she get a kindle or a tablet? How is reading on a tablet vs a kindle?

I want to get her the best device that she can get the most use out of. Kindle, Samsung Galaxy tablet or ipad?

I'm leary of the tablets since she will be reading novels and using for long periods of time.

Hopefully I can get some good feedback here because I have zero experience owning any of these devices.

What's your timeframe? I keep reading about the new kindle being a tablet and hitting the streets this year.. of course there's nothing hard on it yet

tablets are great once you've gotten the itch from a smartphone, but otherwise... for reading, get a reader

Nook or Kindle for a heavy reader for sure. My wife is a heay reader and MUCh prefers eink.

If she just wants to read books, get a Kindle. If LCD screens give her eye strain from prolonged use, get a Kindle. If she likes to read outdoors in the sun, get a Kindle.

If she doesn't want to be tied to one bookstore, get a tablet. If she wants to do things other than reading, get a tablet. If she likes to read inside or later at night, get a tablet.

Like others have said, if she wants to read outdoors, get a BW e-ink unit liek the kindle or Nook. IF she's doing most of her reading indoors, I say go with a tablet and get the versatility of a tablet and not being locked to one store.

I have no problems reading on my Asus Transformer for hours on end.

Ah, but I can read for weeks on end without having to charge my Kindle. 😉

A dedicated e-ink reader is much cheaper, has much longer battery, and is much nicer to read off of than an LCD screen (indoors or outdoors). The obvious downside is being tied to one online bookstore, but I don't mind being tied to Amazon. They have an app for every major platform out there (PC, Mac, Android, iOS, WP7, BB) which I find very convenient.

Transformer or Nook. I use my TF and love it for reading Kindle and Nook books. The glare doesnt really affect me because I hate the sun and when I am at the beach I am under an umbrella anyway so i can still read. My GF has the nook color and while I love it I find the screen too small to read. I know I can raise the font size but it got annoying flipping the page every 5 seconds reading a large font. The transformer works great for me plus I can stream some jazz while reading. I am planing to root her nook soon, she didnt even know she could browse the web!

Touchscreen Nook. Same e-ink screen but much better control system. It also saves some space and weight by not having to have a large chunk devoted to button controls. If she absolutely wants to be able to buy a book anywhere you'll have to get a 3G Kindle, but having wi-fi only never bothered me so I'd go Nook all the way.
