Given that I have a laptop and Android phone, what do I need for a Kindle that was a gift.

Already have a e-reader on it. Apparently per Amazon, I have 500 in some "coin" and no manual other that how the H/W works.

So what is this coin? Download credits?
What is reasonable to download. I expect that anything has to be vetted / routed through Amazon

The 500 coins are equal to $5.00. Anything you buy on your kindle goes through Amazon. For instance, if you have a Viz app and download a manga, it will be charged to whatever payment system you have set up with your Amazon account. To purchase any apps/games you go through Amazon, you can either order from your Kindle or your pc or phone, once it is paid for is it available for download onto your Kindle. So you can purchase coins and use those to pay for any purchases through your Kindle or just use your Amazon account. You can only download those apps/games that can be used on the particular Kindle you have.

that answers the question of what the "coins" are - as suspected.

Now what apps would be actually useful to supplemental the laptop and Android phone.

Slighty OT: "People are too stupid to know paying stuff online actually needs money. Instead of simply using USD, let's confuse them even more by replacing it with coins/points/whatever artificial currency."

with the kindle it all depends upon what your interested in doing. Games, tons of them for all age groups and types anti-virus software-check there are few types for the kindle social media apps-check all kinds financial software-check
I like my kindle because of the bigger screen than a phone but smaller than a laptop so easier to carry around. There is a book called 250+ Apps for the New Kindle Fire HD, I found it a good resource about apps that are helpful and interesting and gives a basic overview of your Kindle.

That book sounds useful - thanks

Amazon could have just credited $5 to my account for downloads instead of this 500 coins. But the # of coins sounds more impressive :p
