$379 Pre-order, July 7th release date
http://www.amazon.com/

I'm tempted to get one. I had the iPad, which I knew wouldn't be ideal for reading books, but I expected to get used to it. Sold it, didn't really need it and wasn't comfortable reading books on it. Funny thing is I've read books on PDAs without problem before, but now that ebook readers have come into their own with e-ink and long battery life, I think it's time to get one.

The regular Kindle seems like a good deal now at $189, but the larger, high contrast screen on the DX looks ideal. $379 is a bit high, but I read a lot, so I think I might just preorder it. PDF support seems like a sweet feature as well (EDIT: didn't know this was standard for the regular Kindle).

Anyone else considering getting it? July 7th is the release date.

Woot has a standard kindle today for $149 plus $5 shipping. I believe it can support pdfs as well.

Yeah, I saw the thread on it earlier in Hot Deals. No cash on hand on the moment, but it sold out anyway.

Didn't know the Kindle supported PDFs out of the box, thought it required conversion. My mistake.

pdf is no big deal, it is the most basic format every ereader should support. However usually if you convert pdf to epub, the ereader will handle that better and save batteries too. But if you are talking about the pdf with lots of pictures and illustrations, epub is useless.

I don't read magazines and newspapers on my ereader, just plain thriller novels.

PDF on the Kindle is reported to be incredibly shitty. It either doesn't fill the whole page and it's just a small page in the middle that you can't read, or it's VERY zoomed in and you have to scroll around to read it.

$379 is an awful lot of money for what it does. Don't know if I'd pay double just to have a bigger screen.

I'd take portability over the bigger screen personally. For anything approaching small laptop / netbook size, I'd rather take out my laptop. :p

Man, I'm pissed that I missed the $149 6" on woot this morning :(

I was planning on getting it at $189, but now I'm wondering if woot will have it again...

Other than being graphite and "50% greater contrast", what's new about the new Kindle DX?

Given that this was such a good deal and the first time they've ever sold the thing, I wouldn't believe they'd have again for a while. Even with their new owners.

Uh, the size increase is the biggest selling point... or did you not see that. DX has a 10" display, the current one has a 6" display.

Amazon's warehouse deals site has the Kindle refurbished for $139.99.

It only has 3G in the US (CDMA) - the one on Woot was the international version (GSM). But not a bad deal if the US only restriction isn't a deal breaker.

Wish I could afford one. Bought a Nook instead and softrooted it. Nice portable RSS reader.

I'm thinking about it. My boss has the 2nd Gen DX and the screen was really impressive.

I keep telling myself that $379 is too much since I can't put porn on it but we'll see.
