My last Kindle broke while traveling.. apparently the screens are sensitive to pressure and I stuff it in backpacks etc.

Do the $40 cases prevent this? Or are they soft? Any cheaper alternatives?

I travel to places where Kindles aren't sold so it is a huge inconvenience for this to happen again.
