Kinda Warm. I/O Magic 8x DVD+-RW drive $129 OTD

Search Staples for item number #554889. Appears to be the price without the rabate and the sale is good starting on 1/4/04. You can make this deal even better by using a $20 off $100 if you can find one or even a $30 off $150 if you add up.

This drive appears to be a rebadged Optorite according to some of the forums I've read. The older I/OMagic products appeared to be NEC's. Some poeple either love or hate the Optorite drives so take it for what it's worth. I'm sure the drive is not as nice as the TDK that staples has been selling for $129 after MIR, but for people that hate rebates you might be able to get it as low as $109 if you play your cards right.

Here is a link to I/OMagics page.

Should've mentioned too that it comes with Pinnacle Studio 8 and winDVD

Sorry I changed the tread to indicate it was Staples.

You can search there weekly specials to find the drive onsale. Not sure if link will work for you but try this.

According to the ad there are no rebates involved, although it does say reg price $179.98 and the regular price currently is $199.98. Don't know what they're doing with that extra $20 but it does say $129.94 is the price you pay.

Appears to be only valid B&M...in MN we don't have any Staples in the Twin Cities area and when I put in my zip it shows the $199.98 price. Viewing the ad that coomarlin linked doesn't give me any online options...

Good deal for those that live near a B&M.

It may be B&M only as far as I know. Like I said the deal doesn't start until sunday, but as the flyer states it's $129.99 out the door with no rebates to screw around with. Then if you can find a $20 off $100 you could get it for $109. That would be fairly hot. Although now I see you can get the 8x NEC for about $130 shipped so without the coupon it's not that hot of a deal. The 8x NEC is also 8X for both + and - r.

More than likely it will be the Optowrite. Same one I just picked up from OM for $29 AR (that's Twenty-Nine Dollars) two days ago.

If you take a look at I/O magics website info for the drive here I believe that model is the same as the Magicspin drives OM was subbing this week-

Can you please enlighten us on this "$29" deal?

Officemax was subbing the Magicspin 8x +/- dvdrw (Optowrite DD0401) for the Khypermedia 8x dvd+ drive this week ($129 - $50 MIR = $79). The magicspin was listed as a sub, and per the substitution sheet, the drive is eliglible for the same rebate (saw the sheet myself). For some reason, the managers were doing the drives at $79.99 +tax out the door. However, the manager himself told me the rebate would be valid on the Magicspin!!

Some OM's were subbing different drives, but supposedly the Magicspin is the only one eligible for the rebate. If it pans out, then I got it for $79.99- $50 MIR= $29.99 +tax. Not bad for an 8x DVDRW 🙂.

This might still be valid if you can find the sub active today at an OM in your area. Last day however.

Some people got a rebadged BTC drive in their I/O Magic box.

Wow, not much excitement over this deal? I picked one up today. It's definately an Optorite. I have already updated the firmware to 130i Firmware version from Accesstek.com.tw.

Seems like a good deal to me. Works great. 🙂

I picked one up, however everytime i try to use HD-Burn via nero6, i get a power calibration error. and i heard from some that upgrading firmware disables HD-Burn. any suggestions?

good luck with that, om barely honors their rebates on the advertised items, let alone subs. managers will tell you anything, it's not their 50 bucks.

I'll second that on the subs...I will no longer buy anything from Office Max because I got screwed on BF '02 when a mgr subbed stuff and the rebates all were denied.

Yea, OM had been getting worse and worse about honoring their rebates.......
I try to stear clear of them if at all possible. The only time I go there is if I can get a price match without a rebate involved.

I don't have any suggestions, but since you are the only person to mention buying the drive so far were you able to use any coupons and what was your final price on the drive? Also, can you verify that you indeed received an optorite drive? What media and software have you used so far?

I saw this today as well I am looking for a coupon now As my $30 off $150 just expired I do not see one directly at cubbypurse 🙁

Is this drive ok with out flashing I screwed a drive up once doing that 🙁 wrong flash

My store had 3 of them

I got one of these drives a few weeks ago and it is a BTC 1008im.
Very happy with the drive so far. Hope they have better QC better than in the past.

well, coomarlin, I actually got the MagicSpin from OM last week during their "deal," it is the optorite dd0401.

i burned tdk +R 4x media @ 4x successfully, and it plays on my sylvania dvd+tv combo

i burned the pre-packaged +R disk for data backup @ 4x, however on later inspection of the disk, it was an 8x... (kinda mad about that... but i did these 2 burns with the bundled nero 5.x software)

i also tried burning an 4x TDK +R @ 8x with the original firmware (110E) using nero6 at 8x, it burned, however at the end, there was a "disc at once" error, and i ended up with a coaster...

i'm pretty new @ this DVD business, if i do burn something successfully @ 8x, i'll post. and i'm still mad at the HD-Burn problems. does anyone know what firmwares can be used successfully with the magic spin or i/o magic optorite drives?! thanks.

What to get excited about? 😕 The current low price on Pricewatch.com for the retail Optorite 8x is $131.75 shipped, No rebate, No sales tax and the current low price on Pricewatch.com for the NEC ND-2500 "8x" (Writes both 8x +/-) OEM drive is $131.00 shipped No rebate, No sales tax. LINK

My Staples didn't have it in store, appearently ever, you could order it through the kiosk though. For some reason I can't get it to come up in a normal search on Staples site, but the link here works, and the kiosk at the store could find it. (If I'm gonna order online, I'm gonna use a coupon! So, I didn't order it then.)

its a btc and its junk. Thats all i need to say as I currently own the BTC version of this drive what a mistake. BTC quality is shot
