hey guys,

i just got a sony dvd drive and it was making this weird sound when i tilt it side to side..so i tried to plug it into my power supply to open the drive (plugged psu into wall then power connector to drive, no mobo) but nothing happens when i plug it in....tried presing the eject button on the drive but nothing..should the fan on the psu move when turned on? or does the entire computer have to be assembled before any power is sent? sorry for the noob question..thanks

When you plugged in your power supply to the wall, did you jumper it on? While you may have a switch on the rear of the power supply, which also has to be turned on to supply power, you have to jump the power supply to turn it on, like your case power switch would.

First, make sure the rear switch is in the Off position.

Then, use something like a paper clip reshaped into a "U" shape, as shown in the second picture below.

Locate the green wire on the 24-pin motherboard connector, insert one end of the "U" shaped paper clip into green wire end and the other end of the "U" into any ground wire, or black wire, end. Then turn on the rear switch of the power supply. It'll turn on.

Pictures:

This one shows the green wire (turn on wire) you're looking for.....and notice all the black wires, which are grounds....

This picture shows the "U" shaped paper clip inserted into the connector jumping the green wire end with one of the black wire ends......
