<< Well, not so obvious. I have read multiple threads/websites that have implied doing just that. I am not willing to do it, maybe someone else has? Just interested. >>

I'd like to take a look at those. How about posting some links?

This deal is still good until the rebate expires (01/12/02 I believe).

I just went to a Staple B&M (Brick & Mortar for you newbies) and exchanged the drive. Got home and it's a Lite-on!!! It looks like Pacific Digital has switched their OEM supplier to Mitsumi since this drive just came onto the market and Mitsumi may be competing with Lite-on for the discount burner market. B&M stores probably have old stock so if you have a B&M store near you and don't doing the exchange the deal is still good. Supposedly tomorrow Staples has this drive for $10 less so I get it for about $64 after tax, rebate, stamp, time exchanging, etc.

Let's just hope my drive lives up to its good reputation. Gotta go looking for those firmware updates.

GP200K As far as the "Pacific Digital" drive having burnproof, I don't think I've seen a 16X or higher CD-RW drive come out without some sort of buffer underrun protection scheme. The Lite-on uses a protection method all their own (I believe based on details from other members' posts) called Smartlink or something. If you get a Mitsumi you get something else (Burnproof, Justlink, etc...)

colossus,

I am truly pleased that you were able to complete this deal. For some unknown reason it means a lot for me to have a good reputation on AT. I was beginning to worry that I sent a lot of people off on a wild goose chase ......wasting time and money. I feel better now. On the negative side, though I have not had any problems with Lite On drives, I am stunned by the number of people I am finding who have had problems with these drives. There seems to possibly be some connection with Lite On drives and Abit mobo's. One of my rigs has a KT7A+ with a Yamaha 16x burner. I will swap burners and see what is to be seen. :)

Danzilla,

I saw your post, and am slightly  asI am having trouble tracking down the websites/threads I stated. I assure you that I did see them, and I am working to find them again. I believe one involved a Plextor firmware revision being used in other drives.

Maybe this deal could be combined with the Turbotax thread I just reported/reposted for better savings?

I've have personally owned 10 different burners from companies like Plextor, Iomega, Yamaha, Phillips, Teac, Sony, Ricoh, and now Lite-on. What I've come to realize is no burner is perfect. I'm not talking about hardware failures, I'm talking just weird kinks in behavior specific to a model. My first drive was a Yamaha and it couldn't burn CD-text or read subchannel (I paid almost $700 for it in 1997). The Plextor didn't allow DMA to be enabled on my dad's Asus P2B-F, and my Teac which I am replacing with the Lite-on is flaky with EZ CD Creator.

The situation with the Pacific Digitals/Lite-on is similar to the Iomega/Plextor situation last year where Iomega switched to Sanyo burners at a specific point for their 12x10x32 ZipCD CD-RWs. Some got lucky, some didn't.

My firmware BTW is 5S0J and Nov 2001 Manufacture date.

Good luck to the rest of you looking for the drive you want :)

I have a question for those who have gotten the lite-on version of the drive.. have you tried using it in Clone-CD, if so were there any problems. Also what does the device show up as under device manager. Im just curious since I'm about to head out to staples. Thanks

Hey, does anyone have a copy of the $30 rebate sitting around? The one on the Staples and RebateHQ web sites now shows up as being only $20, and the clueless folks manning the Staples 877-266-6483 rebate hotline are referring me back to the store, while the store is referring me back to the toll-free number.

Here is the $30 rebate, but i think you must have purchased it at office depot to use it... i can't find a different $30 rebate, maybe someone else can?

The Pacific Digital 24x10x40x i purchased has a lite-on sticker on the top, and shows up as LITE-ON LTR-24102B in device manager

Joemonkey, thanks for responding. I'm referring to the $30 Staples rebate mentioned a few posts above by Tanner. It was definitely available when I bought the drive (see chrisjor's original post at the top of this thread) but it's now been replaced by a $20 rebate for some unknown reason.
