I have a bad habit of breaking my phone once every year. It'll be fine until I've owned it for approx. 1 year and then something wil go terribly wrong. It hasn't failed (Blackberry 8130, 9630, now 9800).

I currently have the 9800 (Torch), but like I said, it'll probably shit the bed in November (1 year).

I like the physical style of the iPhone. It looks aesthetically appealing. As far as I know, the software is decent as well, overall a decent phone.

Though...I know nothing about Android. They seem to be blowing the competition out of the water lately. I've messed with a couple Android phones and they seem like really slick devices.

As for my use...I only usually send text messages, browse the web, and listen to music with it. I don't require a whole lot in terms of usage. I like apps (weather, banking, stuff like that), but I don't play any games with it.

I have no problem with Blackberry, but since they're all I've owned I'd like to give something else a chance.

So...are there any good Android phones coming out between now and December that look pretty good? How about the Samsung S2?

the GS2 if it actually comes out will be the android phone to get. however for your useage it might be overkill. TBH based on what you said pretty much any phone released in the last 6 months will be fine

Don't you have a PlayBook?

An Android phone would make your Playbook a lot less functional...

I don't even bridge my phone with my Playbook, so you can take your trolling comments elsewhere. This thread isn't about RIM bashing and I'd rather you not turn it into such, if you wouldn't mind.

Probably true, but I'm a tech whore so I'll likely want to have a new fancy phone.

I was just asking if you were cool with mixing ecosystems, sheesh....

As far as Android phones being released, there's always a crop of new ones to choose from, 4 months from now is a long time, you should be able to score a dual core large screened phone with no difficulty.

Good stuff. I suppose I should have waiting until closer to that time frame to decide.

What are the benefits of an Droid phone over a jailbroken iPhone? I love themes on my phones so that's a requirement I didn't mention before. I'm sure droid phones have a plethora of themes, but I know iPhones are limited in that capability?

The problem with jail breaking an iPhone is that you're almost always a generation behind with your OS till a new jailbreak comes out.

You can customize the hell out of an Android phone very easily, you can do almost the same thing with an iPhone.

Honestly, knowing you, I think an Android phone is a great fit, I tinker with mine near daily....

I might swap my Torch for the current Galaxy. Someone's looking for a trade...

Not sure if that's a fair deal, though. Mine has minor cosmetic damage and his is nearly brand new. I'm sure I'd like it...would be difficult to part with BBM.

HTC (always more friendly to the modding community) has the Sensation which is the balllz.

The person who only texts and rarely surfs the net does so because its inconvenient or a pain. Getting an android phone will open up a lot of doors of what you thought was possible. The interface between messaging, surfing, sharing, social, music, video is getting pretty slick thanks to Googs efforts.

Android phones can do more than the iphone, hands down.

Not entirely accurate. My Torch is very capable, I just don't care to really do anything else on it. You may be right, but I'm not entirely sure (wouldn't know until I had a new phone).

Not crazy about the HTC's. I've used a few before and they just didn't seem right to me.

HTC hasn't been friendly to the modding community since they stared locking down their phones. Samsung on the other hand has never been better towards modders and actually supplied Cyanogen with a Galaxy S2 so he could work on porting his rom to it.

If you want to stay on AT&T, the top phones to consider this year are the iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy S II, Atrix(already out), and the Atrix's successor.

How is it superior?

Ad-hoc mode vs infrastructure mode. Galaxy S built-in tethering creates infrastructure mode wireless connection so any device can connect to it. Android wifi-tether app creates ad-hoc connection so that limits the type of devices that can connect to it.

Built-in program works without a problem. Android wifi-tether app is beta and can be inconsistent stability wise. But the biggest difference is ad-hoc vs infrastructure. Infrastructure is superior.

The phone is awesome. Really slick.

It's a Rogers phone that I unlocked for use with Telus.

I rooted it and I've installed CyanogenMod 7 nightly. Very slick.

Very impressed with the hardware and the software (especially the 3rd party hacks).

since you break your phone every 1 year... for what seems the past 3 years. Id suggest you just get a decent refurb phone of any kind. Iphone 4 prices are supposed to be dropping soon which might be better price range to compete some of the cheaper androids.
If you're not really doing anything special with your phone and just want to be able to check e-mails, send texts, and surf the web.. it doesnt really matter that much what you get...both droid and iphone developers are making things for both so whatever extras u need theres always a way to get it.
gl though phones sure can be expensive these days...

I ended up swapping my heavily damaged Blackberry Torch for the Samsung Galaxy S. Best decision I've bad as far as tech. It's brand new, no scratches, dents, or anything. Everything in the box included, unopened.

Really sweet phone. I've been pro-blackberry for a while, but I have no shame in admitting my apparent ignorance in mobile electronics. Blackberry seems to be falling pretty short, especially lately. I hope their new QNX phones puts them back in the game.

Though to be fair, with my past devices...

Blackberry Pearl 8130 - Dropped in the snow, run over by a car, didn't let it dry out. Continued to function immediately after for the better part of six months.

Blackberry Tour 9630 - Suffered a lot of abuse. Only failed on me because I had it in a pocket I don't usually put it in. I laid on a bench and crushed the screen. I still have it and may repair the screen and either sell it or maybe keep it for use with my Playbook.

Blackberry Torch 9800 - Suffered a lot of abuse. Never once failed on me. Was ready to try something else and I don't regret it.

But these phones have made it through everything. I got the first one right before joining the military; each one has been with me for countless field exercises in the rain, snow, mud, everything. They've been abused, poorly treated, generally badly maintained, no screen protectors or cases. I'm lucky to have gotten as much life out of them as I have. Solid phones, just not what I want anymore.
