Kind of slow shutdown for windows XP home...

It takes about 25 - 30 seconds to completely shutdown, I read somewhere that XP keeps itself alive longer to let other programs shutdown, xp kill or something. Could this be why it goes slowly? Any other tips?

Thanks

my other rig has incredibly slow shut down for XP ... i did this and it's God Send ...

Start Regedit.
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control.
Click on the "Control" Folder.
Select "WaitToKillServiceTimeout"
Right click on it and select Modify.
Set it a value lower than 2000 (Mine is set to 200)

Another weird thing my pc does, is it takes about 1 minute for me to be able to open the box to connect to internet (ppoe). If I click on it as soon as my pc comes up and everything else seems loaded, about a minute later it opens. Any help?

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! 😉

no really, my other much older computer didn't use to do that

ok. the real answer. XP starts up faster but delays some of the process after the GUI of windows has booted.
what os was your other computer?

usually for XP

boot to desktop
desktop loads
processes loads
apps in the startup folder load
free resources / cpu to do things.

though i still recommend a router.
1. it uses its own ppoe and your connection is ALWAYS ON .. no dialing and messing with ppoe
2. hardware firewall
3. routers are fun

Thanks Sid, my other pc was Win 98 (1st edition). I'm going to get a wireless setup soon, so I'll get a wireless router then. 🙂 Any reccomendations for wireless?

Wait until WPA is released. That's my reccomendation. It's supposed to be more secure then WEP and boy does 802.11x need it!
