Kind of hard to beat a $20 Walmart oil change

Yeah wtf, real men do surgery on themselves! If you can't do CPR on yourself you deserve to die! Everyone is an expert in every subject and it can easily be accomplished in one short life time.

Way to take it to the extreme

We are talking basic car maintenance vs serious procedure that requires great knowledge.

That is a ridiculous thing to say. Should people who don't update their computers monthly or other basic maintenance tasks not own computers? Not to mention older people, single parents, ect.

Oil Change is equivalent to changing memory. And yes many people take it to Geek Squad and pay $100 to do so.....same logic applies.

If you were to ask me, you shouldn't own a car if you are unwilling to to BASIC maintenance.

😀

Also you clearly haven't been screwed by a dealer or experienced their shitty work (I have). From Marked filter not changed to wrong volume of oil......on and on it goes.

I would wager most people should not own cards by your standard.

Popping the side of a PC and installing a stick of memory isn't quite the same as running your car up on ramps (if you own them), drain/change filter/refill and then dispose of the oil. I changed my own oil for decades - I'd much rather pop RAM in a PC than do that (and its worth paying to have someone else do it for me now).

Many dealers (Toyota, Ford...) will do an OC with YOUR oil/filter for $20 (I've read of some that will do it for $10)...
...get some nice synthetic oil and a good filter on sale for, say $15-20 and you have a $65 syn OC for $35-40 (or less if you get the rebates back 😉 ) by someone (perhaps) a bit more reliable than you'd find at a super-mart.

Walmart is good for oil changes. That is if you buy the oil from the shelf.
Great prices on all the synthetic oils.
Its the only reason I'll walk into that store.

My 330Ci takes nearly 7 quarts of oil- cheapest I've been able to squeak by with a coupon has been $70 at a pro shop. I can do it 1/2 that price on my own and since I don't have to climb under the car it's a 10 minute job. (Seriously- oil extractors kick ass: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...pf_rd_i=507846)

The Scion and especially my van are a huge PITA to get to the oil filter. Their engines are spotless inside with just standard oil, so I have no plans to switch to synthetic on them (why bother?).

I used to get my oil changed at Walmart. The last time that I went there they neglected to put the oil cap back on, causing me to blow engine oil all over the engine bay. I usually buy my synthetic oil there and then take it to the dealer to get the work done. My dealer charges like $16 for an oil change if I bring my own oil.

Yeah, but you have to schedule it, leave the car, buncha crap...etc. If they left an oil cap off they would have cleaned the engine up for you and maybe even give you a free oil change (which was my experience when they dripped a bit of oil on my valve cover some years back and caused the engine to smoke/stink).

Well, I'm not asking you. :sneaky:

Never had a problem with Lexus service. Honestly, they're the gold standard by which everyone else is judged. When it comes time to replace my wife's Lexus we WILL be getting another Lexus.

I'll be taking my Camry Hybrid to the dealer for the first 2 years because maintenance is free during this period.

I'll gladly build my own computers, upgrade hardware etc. I enjoy doing that. I hate changing my own oil. It is tedious, messy, and I get very little sense of accomplishment out of it. Plus, I have to dispose of the used motor oil.

 No thanks.

I send my bro there with his Hyundai but no way I'd let them touch my cars. I always prefer to DIY: Mobil 1 and OEM oil filter. I just don't like a random person wrenching on my car because the average person over tightens everything IMO. What worries me most about shops like Wal Mart or Jiffy Lube is the way they handle the interior and exterior. I hate seeing people rest things on paint or even touch the fenders / hood etc. paint is way easier to ruin than fix. 🙂

though there's not much you can screw up in an oil change
Just the whole engine... Stripped drain pan, not enough or wrong oil, missing or loose drain plug. I think Wal Mart is way better than some quick oil change shops but nobody's perfect and if they put my cars on the rack behind 300k mile Corollas I'd be worried about quality f service. Then again I work at a shop an have oil waste bins, discounted parts, every tool Id need and car lifts. If I lived in an apartment without all this I'd probably take my car to the dealer for oil changes.

I own my house and it has a 2 car attached garage. I have all the tools I would need to change my own oil except ramps.

Still not worth it to me to do it myself. Nobody will ever convince me otherwise.

My Honda Civic has gotten Walmart oil changes since I've bought it new. Can't beat the price and convenience. I take it in when I need an oil change and I need to pick stuff up from the store anyways.

I do all my own work on my Bimmer, however, including the oil change.

They put the car on a lift. Kind of hard to rest anything on the car when its 9 ft in the air 😛

yup nothing like diy oil change. You Don;t know if this people are using the right oil and or wiping your filter. The wait is not worth it too.

DIY
get rubber gloves
drain oil
remove filter

15 min lunch break 🙂

refill oil
replace filter
dirty oil in a gallon container
throw gloves away

done in 30 minutes

Dealer or independent shop over tightens everything

i have never had a issue with Walmart doing the oil change. I have only had 2 issues and both were at quick change places. 1 place drained the oil, walked off came back and started teh car i was screaming the whole time and he drove it out.

the other was they drained the oil, filled it walked off. A manager came over and filled it again. i told them what they did, they drained it and said oops yeah we did fill it twice and filled it right.

I said "equivalent" not "the same amount of work"

When a shop overtightens your plug.....or doesn't fill it with oil and starts the car.....or forgets to put back the cap......or # of other things that these places consistently do wrong.....you WILL.

Most people that change oil don't get paid enough to give a shit.

I did the same thing when I bought my Passat. 3 years of free oil changes. 1st year they didnt change the filter/didn't put in the oil I bought myself (synthetic).....and didn't put back the belly pan right (ended up ruining my wheel well).

I went on to do my own oil changes even though they were free.....

30 mins? Takes me less than 5 mins on my Camry.

I used to take my car to Wally, and they always overfilled the oil. They would fill it, then start the car, shut it off, immediately check the oil again before it had time to drain back to the pan, top it off. If you check the oil after it all drained back to the pan it would be way past the fill mark on the dip stick.

I'll just leave this right here:
