Kind of feel badly for Sears

This is how I remember it as well. In our area there were 5 mainstream department store chains, Sears, Montgomery Wards, Hechts, Pennys, and Woodward & Lothrops. All but Sears bit the dust long ago but somehow Sears has remained on life support. I'm not really sure what they did wrong as given that Macys and Pennys are still around I assume the department store business is not completely obsolete yet. There were few things I looked forward to as much as the Sears Christmas catalog as a kid.
This. Too bad my presents never came in until March and/or they didn't work. Late '60's/early 70's. But they were the only game in town at the time.

When I was a kid, you ordered from Sears, then picked the stuff up at a stripmall storefront. The retail location didn't come til' MonkeyWards shut down, and they took their spot.

I have little use for Sears. Their stuff's Chinese, and nothing special. It's a shame to see an American classic die though.

I never shop there online or physically anymore. Tried preordering two things from them, and when the time came both got a "Sorry, we can't fulfill your order. Have a good one." Yea F you Sears. Amazon owns your worthless asses because you can't do simple things right.

Good riddance and the sooner the better.

I wish these dead companies wouldn't drag out the inevitable, exploiting customers with yesteryear's reputation. Just go away and take your crappy buildings full of cheap shit that doesn't work and your filthy parking lots with you. 🙂

Screw that. When I need a socket or some other tool there is no place handier to buy it than the local Sears. Are you going to order the socket online and wait a week for it?

The clown that took over sears doesn't care about the employees or the company, he is just squeezing money out while it slowly tanks. He knows that the good name of Sears built up over a hundred years is worth something. Thanks for destroying an iconic brand.

Walmart killed Venture and Kmart.
Sears couldnt compete at the low end or the high end.
They failed mostly by failing to capitalize on the internet. They were the biggest catalog provider back in the day, They had a lot of the logistics set up, they had the infrastructure. If they had only survived the 90s, they could have become what Amazon is today.

F Sears.. bought a lawnmower from them a few years back at one store that didn't have it in stock, but they said another store not too far away had it and I could pay for it there, and just pick it up at the other location. Did that, and when I went to pick it up, they say someone else picked up the item already and there was nothing they could do to help me. I'm the only one with a receipt in hand for the item. They have camera's all over the place. If they needed the camera to prove that someone stole something, they probably had no problem bringing it up.

I had to get the police involed before they could do anything for me. Next day, went back with the police, and they said they made some mistakes and such.... I was sooo angry!!!

The only I go to Sears for is to take a shit in their bathrooms when I am at the mall. So glad to hear them not doing well, F em!!

Maybe for some people but, Home Depot, Lowe's, Napa, AutoZone, PepBoys, Amazon, etc.?

If it's unusual or a specialty tool it's right to the internet or a known shop anyway, not many people will hunt for stuff anymore.

Go to home depot or lowes and get an equal or better quality tool, or, order one off amazon.com, pay the 3.99 extra, and get it next day via prime.

No question about it. When I was a kid (yes that was a LONG time ago!)
my brother and I used to live for the Christmas Wish-book especially and flipped through the regular catalogs just for fun.

...while on the toilet, masturbating furiously.

Or so I've been told kids did that back in the day.

F Sears... So glad to hear them not doing well, F em!!

After an experience buying a microwave I feel the same.

LOL How terrible does your company have to be to have people cheering at your demise? Sears = Saddam Hussein. 🙂

They're an eye sore here at South Coast Plaza in Orange County. They own that corner of the land and South Coast can't kick them out.

It was kind of nice ... I had my grandpa's 50+ year old Craftsman 1/2" drive ratchet that wore out. Last week, I brought it into the local Sears and they gave me a free replacement (I think some associates can fix them on the spot, but I got a newbie)

Be careful. Probably safe to just say don't do that anymore. A lot of their tool production is Chinese now and it's not as good as the old stuff. Some people collect the USA Craftsman stuff. You can probably find a NOS rebuild kit for any other ratchets you have and they'll be good as new. I'd rather do that. Plus, I'd just want to keep my grandpa's tools.
-----------

I think it was Walmart, Lowes, and Home Depot that did Sears in. And really the mall concept itself has aged somewhat. Populations move over time, and Sears was anchored, almost literally to the aging malls. They didn't keep up with where the people with money were moving.

I've said this before in other threads and it's sad but true. These days I think the lifetime guarantee at Harbor Freight will be good longer than Sears.

I have a soft spot for Sears as well (and I'm in the same age bracket as OP).

As a kid in the 70s, our local Sears had a collectible card section where I could buy and sell my baseball and football cards - we had no other such places locally. Also we got our first two video game systems there...a Sears branding of Pong and the Sears Video Arcade (Atari 2600 rebrand). My mom used to buy most of pants at Sears - ToughSkins were cheap and were the only clothes we could afford that would last until I outgrew them.

It's also where I bought all my tools as a young 20-something, most of which I still have.

Oh man, I had toughskins. Seemed like they'd stop a bullet.

Reminds me I have a Sears and Roebuck catalogue from the early 1900's. If you don't remember the Roebuck part then your too young for this discussion. It's amusing to see guns and rifles for a couple bucks or the Ivory keys, walnut piano for only $22. Of course that was a fortune back then but still it's amusing catalogue to look at.

I still shop at Sears for some Craftsman stuff. I also used to have a Sears Atari...though it wasn't called Atari, just said Sears video computer system or something like that.

wow, you know of a nearby KMart?

I do, I have one 30 minutes away.

Haha. I hope they are the last ones there, only to piss people off.
South Coast is trash. Its meant for all the Saudi and Chinese tourists, hangers on's, and those that have to keep up with the Joneses that think high society means dropping a ton of cash at the designer and jewelry end of the mall. The locals go to Fashion Island, have shit custom built for them at small boutique stores, or just fly to Europe and get it from the source.
The real Newport rich have no issues slumming it at Macy's or Pier One, bypassing the tourist mess.

Can you show/link to where Craftsman hand tools are Chinese made? I've yet to see one example of that....their power tools, on the other hand, are Chinese made, true. But their hand tools--sockets, hammers, wrenches, etc.--that are Craftsman are labeled either made in USA or Forged in USA. So what you're claiming is Sears is lying about their hand tool production.

They are still worth a look for appliances, our washer and dryer are both Kenmore and when we remodeled out kitchen this summer they had the best price for the range we wanted better even than what I could find from the online appliance retailers. Ditto for replacing appliances in another house I take care of.
