Kind of a weird problem has me stumped

My computer lately has been having issues going to yahoo.com or any site that connects to it. It just sits there trying to load. The status bar says "connecting to l.yimg.com or yui.yahooapis.com and nothing happens. This is in firefox. So I thought maybe just a firefox problem. I opened internet explorer and same problem. I tried another computer on my network thinking maybe it's a router issue or something else, the other computer is fine.

Did a virus scan, nothing came up. Used malwarebytes nothing came up. Checked the hosts file to see if it had been altered. Nothing.

Anyone have any ideas?

it would seem to be some sort of software issue or malware......

Try booting into safe mode with network support.. and see if it takes as long to load web pages while in safe mode as well.....

Also scan your hard drive for errors..

have you tried opening control panel , internet options , advanced , go down the page about 2/3 the way and click on reset , under Reset Internet Explorer settings . I have seen where windows some times can cause corruptions with all browsers , and reseting here clears the problem .

does the same thing in safe mode in both firefox and IE. Drive is clean for errors, i scan regularly. Resetting IE to default didn't do anything, same problem.

Sounds like your registry could be corrupt then .. from either prior cleanup, installing software, etc...

there is a tool called WINSOCKFIX that may be worth trying.. .Otherwise you may have to reinstall windows....

the only other think I can think of would be to uninstall/reinstall the drivers for you ethernet port....

hmmm i'm trying to think of a reason as to why a corrupt registry could affect only ONE website.

The winsock fix is worth trying, i'll give it a shot when i go home at lunch.

Sorry.. i didn't catch that part.. i thought it was any website....

In that case , ignore my previous suggestions....

if its a specific site.. you may have some type of extension/add-on enabled, that is conflicting with it.. .Or perhaps you're running some type of ad blocker within your browser, or on your pc in general ?

those other 2 addresses you see reference when you try to connect to yahoo are part of Yahoo.. (Domain image servers, i think)..

So the question is.. did you ever try blocking them with a firewall program of some type in the past ?

I would seem to have to be related to a firewall/anitivirus/spyware type issue.. given that neither browser works.. So maybe everything isn't disable, and there is still some subcomponent of your spyware or firewall program running..

I assumed you cleared the cache within your browsers...as well

I don't run realtime protection of virus or spyware. In 15 years of owning a computer i've only ever had a virus once. I run malwarebytes occasionally to clean up but it's never found anything. I'm pretty safe with surfing and don't usually get bugs. The only software firewall i'm running is the windows firewall and i checked that, even turned it off and still had the problem.

Yup cleared the cache on both, no dice.

This is why i'm stumped, i don't run alot of crap on my system. I'm a minimalist. I have some 3d modelling software and a few games and Sonar and that's about it.

got it. was a DNS problem. I had set my dns server manually and evidently they aren't working lately. Set it to auto and it's fine. I totally forgot i had made that change.

Thanks. Problem solved.
