I wanted to take up the violin...kind of a lark.

Anyone play the violin? How hard is it to pick up/learn?

How much would a "starter" violin cost?

any pointers/tips?

thx guys =]

I played the violin for around 8 yrs. I think hard is just kind of hard to define...if you want to make it sound good, then it will definatly take practice.....but it is very enjoyable.

making sound out of the instrument is easy, but there are a lot of things a player needs to know and learn to get the right "sound."

Mine, when I brough 12 years ago, cost around 500 USD........it was a good beginner violin...and I used it all throughout high school.

tips? I would say you definatly want to get a private teacher. The teacher will tell you about the form, fingering positions, and all that stuff....to get you started.

Once you get used to it, it will take time and practice to make it musical...

good luck, let me know...

I've played the violin for around 5 years now. If you're willing to practice a lot, learning to play the violin won't be that hard for you. I bought my instrument when I started for around $500. Decent sounding instruments will cost you about that much. If you play the piano, like I did, starting to learn the violin will be really easy for a while because you can sight read better than others can. As for pointers, just go find yourself a good teacher. If you have a good teacher, you'll be able to get you going fairly easily.

i knew a guy that had/has a 13k violin.
i took violin for a few years, parents got me some pos that cost ~$50. lol.

thx for the tips guys
i taught myself to play guitar/piano/bass/drums so i might be better off then someone completley new. I will look into a teacher.

again, thx for the advice =]

Good luck. Guitar is one of those instruments where most people self teach it, but if you're capable of self-teaching yourself piano to a good degree, you might not do too badly with the violin. Smart move with looking into a teacher.
