Kimbo vs Ray Mercer June 23

Kimbo needs at least a year or two of MMA training before he will be able to compete in any MMA that involves not standing on ones feat and fighting like 2 hockey players.

I hope Mercer beats him into a living death.

tell us how you really feel

Obviously you havent seen The Ultimate Fighter season 3 have you? The most memorable line in the entire show is when Ken Shamrock is huffing and puffing at Tito Ortiz and lets out the now ubiquitous "I am going to beat you into a living death" line.

Lounatik

Im pretty sure the "I am going to beat you into the living death" line was delivered at their first(?) press conference.

He could have said it on the show as well tho. Anyway... The above video is probably my favorite confrontation between the two.

Wasn't Mercer the one crying in the boxing ring about 10 years ago when he fought, ithink, Lennox Lewis?

No, that was Oliver McCall. McCall has a long and tragic history of drug problems.

the way Tito laughs after he says it is great, obviously fake. But Ken sure looks upset.

Mercer is old.

Old fighters are easier to defeat b/c they've had more concussions over time. Each concussion gets easier and easier to get as fighetrs age.

It'll be an interesting fight....

Jesus, Kimbo is not even a street fighter. All he wants people to do is play by HIS rules. He's strong and his boxing is alright (nothing special) but THAT'S IT. Kimbo's b!tch gangsta crew jumped all in the Gannon fight because their sh!tty fighter was getting the sh!t kicked out of him. They agreed to no chokes on the ground, and when Sean attempted a guillotine STANDING UP, Kimbo's b!tch crew jumped in and called cheating. Those morons obviously didn't know that you could apply a choke standing up so they called BS. Anyway, if those were MMA rules, Kimbo would have been gone in under a 1 minute. And if Kimbo wants to jump into the UFC or any other MMA league, he's going to get owned and reality is going to crack him right on the jaw, HARD. If Mercer has ANYTHING left, he should be able to beat Kimbo pretty easily. I REALLY wish he would fight in K-1 and let Jerome Le Banner light his ass up.

yup. Kimbo sucks. Big time. VERY overrated.

should be a good fight. Kimbo is great in certian situations. one of those is not a MMA fight. he is going to lose. sure Mercer is old but he has skills. kimbo just has brute strenght wich can only take you so far (look at sapp)

I think Kimbo sucks, but you gotta remember this. Mercer is not an MMA fighter, he is a boxer. Even though Kimbo is typically a street fighting bully who only bareknuckle boxes, what is to prevent him from taking Mercer down? Mercer is also quite old. I don't like Kimbo but he has a good chance in this fight if he goes to the ground. He'll get beat up standing.

Kimbo's a crappy streetfighter who depends on being much larger than his opponents. Anyone with skill could beat the living hell out of him. I saw a lanky karate instructor beat the crap out of him in a video once.

edit: here's a clip of him losing to sean gannon. The first few comments from 'ultraviolent6' are pretty telling. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hx9WPWJLodE

And the fact remains that he beat Ray Mercer in the first round...

Mercer is washed up, has been for a while. big deal.

just because mercer is old doesn't mean kimbo is good. kimbo can only fight drunk bastards in his back yard. with any real pro or disciplined MMA hitter he doesn't stand a chance

Bas Butten is (was) training him, and stood up for him saying he has tons of potential. If Bas is behind a person then they're probably the real deal.

Mercer wasn't a good fighter for him to face, he's too old. But for only have trained for a few months Kimbo did exceptionally well, I don't care who he was facing, he came with some decent knees and a nice choke. If he keeps training he will be a force to be dealt with. To say he's just a big dude who fights people in street fights is a bit extreme. He's strong as hell and extremely fast for his size. You can say Mercer is way past his prime but Mercer is still a legendary boxer. He just happened to not train well for an MMA match, and probably underestimated his opponent, so he ended up getting owned badly.

to TalpnOP that's crap, off his strength alone he'd stand a chance, if he connects with one of his hooks it's gonna hurt whoever he hits. He's new to MMA so of course he needs time to train and get better, nobody was born a great MMA fighter. Only time will tell if he's going to be big in MMA, but he definitely has potential. He's gonna fight Tank next, Tank is kind of too old, but in his prime he was probably the hardest puncher MMA has ever seen, and as old as he is. I'm sure he still hits hard as sh!t 🙂

I'm still not convinced. Kimbo is a strong guy with explosive punches. He's fought a bunch of guys in the street, and he's fought a washed up old boxer. So what? Have him fight someone who's not a bum.

I'll give him credit when he fights someone good and wins.

you have to start somewhere, it's not like he's good enough, or even deserves to fight a Fedor for his first fight. There is probably no MMA fighter he could have fought that would have impressed the die hards. Your first bout you don't deserve to fight a somebody. He will fight a a few unknowns now, and if he shows any signs of being a legit MMA person and actually wins they'll step him up to a real fight. In his weight class I'm not sure who, maybe Cabbage? I could see a Kimbo Vs. Bob Sapp event happening.

Who is good to you? I'm curious who they'll have him face after Tank.

Is he really going to fight Tank? Tank is old and isnt the same fighter as he once was. A fight against Bob Sapp would be more appropriate. Both fighters have plenty of strength and lack endurance.

Any news yet on a future ring fight for Kimbo?

Tank is on for September according to messages I've read, it's not offical but Tank was at the PPV and did call Kimbo out. It makes sense I suppose.

to krunchykrome, Bas has said that Kimbo's Cardio has improved greatly over the past few months and he'll train with Bas until he drops every day. That doesn't say much as he had almost zero endurance before. But if his cardio is that much better he might be a force.

Tank is washed up, but still one of the hardest hitters ever in MMA. I doubt Tank will train, but Kimbo facing a dude who has almost killed people with a single hook will test his toughness. I have no doubt Kimbo is strong as hell and very determined but we've never seen his ability to absorb punishment. Tank might only have 1 minute of real fight in him when this match goes down, but all it takes is one solid shot from Tank to really test somebody's toughness 🙂

Sapp would be a better matchup, Sapp is actually pretty good. I mean he did beat somebody who beat Cro Cop (name slips my mind) I think Sapp is pretty fun to watch I'm not sure why so many people seem to dislike him so much. He's very entertaining to listen to in interviews, the Japanese people love him.

I'd like to see Kimbo vs Liddell. Why? Because Liddell sux. He has no ground game, and no leg game. All he does is stick his chin out, and try to punch people out. Great match for an MMA noob like Kimbo. Sapp would be another good match. Some little 150 lb submission artist would tap Kimbo out in about 15 seconds....

Mercer now Tank? Lets get somebody who isnt ready for SS benefits 😀

However he did look quite a bit more athletic in that fight than his youtube videos beating up wannabes.

I disagree about Liddell, he has great take down defence and is actually a good wrestler, you just never see it. I'm not a Liddell fan but I give him respect, you just never really see him go for the take down because he's a pretty good ass striker.

I disagree about the sub artist submitting him in 15 seconds, his size alone makes him have some natural take down defense, somebody like GSP who is awesome at take downs would have a difficult time getting him down. I mean he couldn't slam him that's not gonna happen, and to tackle a 245lb dude would probably be a task. now if a GSP got him down I think it would be clockwork for an Armbar or RNC to happen. Or even some serious ass GNP, but you have to remember Kimbo's training with Bas, and Bas's probably working him really hard to learn take down/take down defense. His strength and speed give him awesome stand up, but he needs to get the ground work down.

He's 33 years old I believe, he's not going to ever be a BJJ Black Belt, I don't even know if he'll learn any type of Martial Arts. Give him 3 years to learn some wrestling, submission & maybe a bit of Judo he could be a force up or down. I mean imagine a 245lb dude slamming somebody similar to a Rampage, Randleman or Hughes. I couldn't imaging getting GNP'ed by his tree trunk arms would be good for anybody.

I am a HUGE Tank fan, I don't care if he's over the fighting hill and lost 7 of his last 8. The match will last all of 40 seconds regardless of who wins. But to see Tank fight again will be great for a fan like me. And who knows he could smash Kimbo with his hook and end it 8 seconds in. I doubt Kimbo's ever been hit as hard as Task can.

what I like about Kimbo is he acts like a monster when he fights, but in interviews he's pretty soft spoken and seems like a very nice mellow dude. I don't like Frank Shamrock types who are cocky arrogant a-holes.
