All right, so I just spent the weekend editing a video on the university mutimedia machines, and I need a setup like for myself. What would you recommend as far as motherboards, and also cpus and ram? I already know I want dual 19 or 21 inch flat panel monitors, any particular brand?

The mobo won't matter as much as the cpu. I think you'll be equally set with any p4 or a decent athlon 64. I'd recommend the new 90nm athlon 64 3000, $179 OEM right now at newegg and a killer overclocker. For a mobo I'd say just about anything that fits your price range and has the features you want, just as long as it uses either a nforce3 250 or k8t800 pro chipset. RAM should be 1gig of pc3200, either value ram (corsair's is cheapest) or anything with a higher speed rating if you wanna overclock, which you should look in to as the 3000 will overclock really well.

Here's the setup I've got so far -

MB: Soltek K8TPro 939
CPU: Athlon 64 3500+
RAM: 2x1 GB OCZ
VID: ATI X800 XT
HD: 2x160 GB WD SATA
DVD/RW: Sony 16x DVD+R
Case: Thermaltake VA3000 Dream
Monitors: 2x19" Viewsonic LCD

Whatta ya think?

Ok, I didn't know if you meant high end or budget. I see you want high end. In that case, heres my thoughts:

MB: I really like that soltek you picked, but be warned, until they release a new bios, you won't be overclocking too much
CPU: Thats the best cpu to get right now(for price/performance), just make sure its the 90nm winchester
RAM: I agree with you, but more specifically the pc3200 platinum rev. 2
VID: Matter of opinion, as I happen to like the 6800gt for ultra performance when OCed and $100 cheaper
PSU: OCZ powerstream- 420w if you don't plan on having many drives, 520w if you do
HD: WD 74gb Raptor, add second HD if you want more space than 74gb
DVD: I've heard nothing but good things about the NEC 3500
Case: totally up to you

I think you basically have a great setup from what you picked, and most of the stuff I replaced is more a matter of opinion than anything. Hope this helps!

Sounds awesome - I was also looking at the possibility of a dual cpu board...opterons or xeons

Hmm, for video editing it may be a good idea, but thats not really my area of expertise. I DO know that in general computer usage, (i.e. gaming, internet browsing) dual cpus have very little impact. You'll have to find someone else to post on the benefits of dual cpus in video editing.

edit: Here is a thread that will help you.
