WEST PALM BEACH -- As if hurricanes, roaches, sea lice and insurance bills weren't bad enough, Floridians can add a new menace to their list of worries. Killer bees are here.

And they're going to change your life. After decades of hype and cheesy disaster movies, Africanized honeybees have established a foothold in Florida, bringing a hair-trigger temper that makes them a threat to farmworkers, landscapers, meter readers, firefighters and basically everyone who ventures outdoors.

story

Well we knew it was a matter of time.

While I think that is a bit overexagerated, isn't there some way to kill them off now? Before they spread?

From other stuff I've read recently, the threat of killer bees is blown out of proportion by the media. Yes, they're deadly. But, they're not quite as prone to attacking as the media makes it seem.

I'm not so sure about that.. It takes almost nothing to set them off.. mere vibrations...

Summer isn't here yet, so the media doesn't have shark attacks to scare people with yet. Guess this'll have to do.

Media hype... too many of those sensationalist discovery shows where the guy mowing the lawn got stung and dies...

Watch some of the more realistic shows that do more than just report the attacks... the guys doing research on killer bees have no trouble walking right up to the hives to watch what's going on. (Of course, they still have on some protective equipment)

Yes, you have to be careful around them.. but they're not as prone to attacking in the first place as you might believe after watching a few of those shows. However, once they start the attack, they are quite relentless and will pursue their victim over great distances.

I just saw something on the boob tube that they found a way to breed the killer bees with another set of bees that will bring the temped down to near none.

And when I lived in West Palm before moving back to Chicago back in 98 I dont think the bees would ob been high on my list. The friggin fire ants were murder done there. Everwhere you stepped it was a fire ant hill and you were getting bit :p

IMO, fire ants are a greater nuisance than africanized honey bees. Of course, I've never been attacked by killer bees . . .

I hate fire ants :|

We had these things in Panama, I never had a problem with them. Yet another media scare tactic to fill the new void on newsless days.
