Killer Bee

This afternoon, 13-year-old Pratyush Buddiga, of Colorado, won the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee by spelling the word "prospicience," after having correctly spelled "murrigeration," the word missed by runner-up Steven Nally, of Tennessee.

Whew.

When I was eleven years old, I briefly enjoyed a bit of popularity in my Junior High School for being a finalist in the city spelling bee. I went on to the state bee, and flamed out in the third round, ironically missing a word that I knew - "misogyny." I spelled it "mysogyny," for reasons unknown.
The judges obviously hated women, because they tossed me out. 😉

Anyone out there with spelling bee experience? If so, what word shot you down?

breakfast, in third grade. 😛

I'm now the best speller I know; I have family members, friends, acquaintances ask me constantly how to spell something. I'm also one of the fastest typists and most grammatically correct typists I know. 😀

That is truly grimly ironical that you misspelled misogyny :Q BTW I was in the 4th grade before I could spell my own name correctly 😉

i remember being so happy when i finally learned how to spell "sheriff' right. that is the extent of my spelling adventures.

Can anyone remember the lyrics to "Who Shot The Sheriff?"

I did really good one year -- 5th grade. I placed top 3 in the school. If only I had studied harder... Oh well.

My younger brother, on the other hand, won for his school both 7th and 8th grade, and almost won city wide once. [yoda]Smart little cookie, he is.[/yoda]

<------- Winner of her elementary school spelling bee. In 1991, when I was in 5th grade.

I went to the county spelling bee but got my arse kicked. I missed "nebulous" (spelled it "nebulus"), "dirge" (spelled it "durge"), "chalice" (spelled it "chalis"), and one more word I don't remember. It was one of my shining moments of childhood, though. 🙂

😛 Go back and look through all my posts, see if my level of grammatical skill is not far above that of most of the posters on this forum...

Oh, wait, that's not really saying much... 😛

We had a manditiory spelling bee in our class in like 7th grade...i can without doubt say i was the smartest kid in there (check my grades 🙂) but i did not care for spelling bees so i spelt Volcano Voklayno on the first round then just screwed around the rest of the day 🙂

Psst. You need to look up "mandatory." 😉

Wasn't the song called "I shot the sheriff"?

I was a good speller, but my tiny school didn't have any organized spelling competitions. After successfully tackling "Punxsutawney" in an informal 5th grade homeroom contest with two others, the teacher declared me the winner and ended the contest by saying I would never miss. It only took about 3 months for the abuse from the other students to fade away!

Yeah, it was "I Shot the Sheriff", I think.

Punxsutawney. Crikey, what a word for a 5th grader. Hey, do you know Phil the groundhog?
