Killed a computer at work today

I went to the start menu -> shutdown, then clicked ok. As it was shutting down, I heard what sounded like a spark and a bit of smoke from the pc. That made my day.

:Q😀

Funny story. The lady in the cube next to me at work killed a monitor the other day. I work in tech support (so does she), and I was playing with some old hard drive magnets. If you've never handled a hard drive magnet, they're extremely powerful. The strongest magnets I've ever seen. Anyway, she asks if she can see the magnets, and she proceeds to hold the magnet up directly in front of her monitor to examine it. She's degaussed the monitor 15 or 20 times since then but there are still horrible color streaks going all across the monitor. She should have known better.

That can be fixed, but it's not fun.

You should get ahold of the magnetic rod that's inside laser toner cartridges, it's quite powerful as well.

breaking things is cool!

on that note... theres a computer here that needs.... uh... fixing... anyone know where i can get some bolt cutters cheap? 😉

I've littered every mechaninc, repair shop, computer store and just about every techinical-oriented place with that thing for years now!
I got that from my cousin about 10 years ago, and just recently scanned it in. It's a real timesaver! 😉

Almost as good as this one - Sound System reality check. (Passed around Live Audio companies quite a bit!)

I currently work as an office support/helpdesk guy at an engineering firm, and recently we had a problem with a guy who said his machine was producing a burning smell. Upon inspection, I had seen that he stuck a paper clip in his power supply fan. He said he didn't like the noise. I told him not to worry, that fan was just there for decoration anyway.

I'll show him that flowchart.

Sorry to hear that... I wish I had at least one computer or computer part fail on me. I've been using computers so long and nothing ever broke... 🙁 I'm starting to get bored.

Thats not very smart, and the flow chart is cool.

I've killed a monitor at school... i picked it up and tossed it on the floor.. made cool noise, as for the flow chart I've seen it as a t-shirt...

Two weeks ago my Dell at work started making an extremely loud whirring sound. My guess was that one of the fans was off-balance or something. A few days later the noise was completely gone. Yesterday when I rebooted it (for the first time in weeks) during the POST I saw a message that said the power supply fan had failed. The thing had been out for 2 weeks but the computer had been running fine the whole time. I told one of the IT guys and he just said "I'll have to have someone look into that..."
