Toshiba has just announced the first Xscale PDA, the e740. This comes with integrated WiFi, and built in SD and compact flash expansion slots. (See my other post in "General Hardware" for more details).

PC Nation is offering this for $554 - a lot less than some IPAQs with a 206Mhz strongarm processor and limited expansion.

I got no money, but I want it I want it I want it.

I'll buy one when there's more optimization in the OS cores to take advantage of it...and they won't cost $550 by then ;)

Best Buy.com has it in stock for $574 after $25 MIR. Still too rich for my blood.

Toshiba e740

Will battery life be worse with the new 400 MHz processor? Some PocketPCs with the older 206 MHz processors had poor battery life.

probably worse than ARM-based PPC ... and the speed scaling back and forth doesn't sound too promising ...

Over in General Hardware, there's a thread about a review of this model here. It answeres a lot of the questions people have already asked, but I'll summerize anyway :)

Battery life: With Wifi enabled and full backlight, the reviewer said it lasted about 1.5 hours before the wifi shut off, battery life read 55%. With the wifi off, battery life was about 5-7 hours.

Speed isn't really noticble, yet. Once the OS is recompiled to take advantage of the speed, it should be noticable. Same with applications. Personally, if it came down to this PDA or an ipaq 3850, I'd go with this one. Better off for the future :)

Wow, this is definitely a 10 on the geek scale. I'd love to jump all over this, but I read this article about how the Pocket PC OS will not even be partially optimized for the xscale processor until at least 2003 and fully optimized until 2004. Ironically, it might be a linux version ready before most others.

The dpc # is 08 012 0363

If you plan on calling around to find one you may screw yourself out of the deal (that is if you can find one). Once the employee punches the number in and sees the price you might hear "we don't have any".

Dropped by my local Target... they don't even carry any IPAQs.

Is that normal? They had the Palms, Sony, etc but not the Compaqs.

They did carry them but it will be extremely hard to find a store that has any left. Back in March when Target first marked them down someone posted about the $339 / $279 price on FW and a feeding frenzy began. Most stores sold out of them at that time.
