I know very few of you would make these comments face to face. So why do it here? :( Some of the comments lately lead me to believe that the Mods have completely given up on this bunch. :)

I don't expect anyone to act like a Harvard Professor, but civility and modesty are virtues.

Mea culpa.

Agree completely. Though some have trouble drawing the distinction between a Public Figure and people on a "Discussion" board, the best solution is to ignore Ad Hominemites!

It goes in cycles. I remember some asshat;) posted a thread about this sort of subject and it was stickied. It helped for a while but the civility waned soon after it dropped. There have been more attempts too and all help to somewhat raise the level of discourse, but as always it goes in spurts. I think the reason it's lowered again is the lack of real issues being posted and more of the same old same old rehashed crap being argued.

Meh - politics is by nature nasty because of the ideological divides it highlights.

Ya, who was that asshat, what an idiot that guy was! ;) :p :D

Must have been some evil Neo-con YABA, who is hell bent on destroying America and the world;)

what kind of idiot are you to think that would work?!?!

no, im just kidding.

but i think the best of us have trouble ignoring people when they do "come after" us and, although one may be able to ignore it up to a point some of the attacks can be down-right vicious.

Actually i think things have been quite mellow - save a few comments here and there. Before you came in here(when my thread was stickied) it got quite a bit more vicious and heated than it is today:p

I expect it to get quite a bit more heated as next November approaches.:)

I really think the problem is more of a generational one. I was raised in the '50's by a Victorian grandmother. I like Edith Wharton's writing and I don't give guys the finger on the highway. Two generations later, one cannot distinguish between behavior on the highways and behavior on many public forums. USENET is the absolute worst.

Here's a query for you folks to ponder: "Why wouldn't you take pride in the quality of your facts and arguments rather than in the quantity and visciousness of your insults?"

Quite a few people post on this board and many of them have helped me with technical problems. I probably disagree with every single one of them on some political or social issue of importance. But, why would I turn them into an enemy with an idle insult? Aren't friends better than enemies? I know this sounds very naive and preachy, but, good grief, why ruin a good argument with some trashy language? Although both conservatives and liberals are guilty of this behavior, I would think the nature of conservatism would have most conservatives nodding in agreement and comforming their behavior to older norms. Alas, that isn't so. So are these people conservatives or just hostile and maladjusted, like so many liberals? :)

Ultimately, I don't think most of these insults have anything to do with the political discussion at hand but with the rampant repressed hostility we see in many modern males.

Cad -

I expect it to get quite a bit more heated as next November approaches.

Every November it is a tradition to cook a Turkey,
The heat will keep being turned up until you can stick a fork in it,
If Iraq dosen't resolve itself - he's done.

Corn:

Moonbeam wasn't "begging" for anything. You're begging to pull the trigger. When you figure out the difference, phone home. :)

We may have 100K people on this site, but not on this forum. We have about 20-30 regular posters, so readership is probably woefully low. I wouldn't be too impressed with your impact on the next election.

But, mere numbers won't make you a public figure. The threshhold for becoming a public figure is quite high. Don't worry you aren't one, particularly since you don't post your name in your profile. If you want to become a public figure-and get visits from the relatives of the people you trash here-then post your full name in your profile. :)

Best Regards,
Robert

Now you're beggin' for it too!

Have you unintentionally stumbled upon something, looked it square in the face, and yet still haven't noticed it, even though you said it?

I'll let you think that over for a moment........ :D

I wouldn't be too impressed with your impact on the next election.

Hah! Well not for my efforts here anyway. I'm a sign tackin' foo.......alas, my labor in this regard is one focused on the local issues, not national. It's a waste of time trying to argue sense into people, ain't gonna happen.

Sure, I may pick up something or another here, as I'm sure you have too, but in the grand scheme, what has it changed? I'd bet not much, but then again, you're on the side of right, right? ;)

Aint gonna happen.

I remember in my younger days when I was a staunch conservative.....I couldn't help but be a bit obnoxious.

I knew it all and I knew I was it right......it just made so much sense.

I haven't noticed a difference--what's changed between "then" and now? :D

Ferocious:

That's why you'll never find a young philosopher. :) My teenage daughter is never going to die and she is always right. :)

I notice that many of the posts here are full of typing errors, jumbled syntax, missing or mis-identified antecedents, and sheer stupidity. This suggests that quite a few folks make what I call "out the door" posts. They just throw something out and hope it sticks. Though such posts occasionally engender some of the finest discussions they are generally not worth reading. My suggestion is that unless you happen to be Stirling Professor of History at Harvard, you would be wise to think at least twice before you hit the send button. Now, if only we could get GW to take the same approach....
