It helps to show you why your electric bills might be higher than neccessary. If you are the kind who leaves your stuff running all the time (TV, computer, lamps) it could give you a real world measure of what that appliance actually translates into real dollars, instead of just an abstract number on your electric bill. Might give you an incentive to remember to turn off the TV or lamp when you leave the room!

Good review here, http://www.the-gadgeteer.com/review/kill_a_watt_electric_usage_monitor_review

Thanks for the info and the link. You should post more often :)

In regarding saving money.... Who here thinks energy costs will stay the same or perhaps even go lower? My gues it whatever you are saving now will be doubled per month by the time the thing wears out. Buy something of quality and perhaps it will last long enough to save 6 times what it does today. I do hate to waste.

Energy Bills just raised 23% here!!!!!! Down, not in a long shot with the price of Gas only rising this summer. This meter is probably a smart thing, I just can't jusify the price for it right now. To bad it wasn't $20 shipped or I'd buy it :)

Not to thread cap but Don't buy from these crooks!!! I ordered two complete sets of ink from them and I received 2 ink cartriges out of 12, 4 tiny padlocks, and some dental film. I called to have the order fixed they said it would be 2 to 3 weeks after they received the order back from me so I said just issued me a refund. I told them what I had received instead of the ink and they said just ship it back. So when they received it they sent me email saying there were items in the box not on my order so they only credited 5 dollars of the 39 dollars the order cost. Which took over a month to even get back. I then called them and said why did they only credit 5 dollars he said You sent me back stuff the wasn't on the order and we can't credit for those items. I told him I called 5 mins after I received the order and told them that they sent me wrong stuff and he said he doesn't care and they don't even carry those items that were in the box. I said just give me my money back and he refused so I had to charge it back thru my bank to get the full refund. He even acccused me of putting that stuff in there saying that I Just wanted free ink and that I kept the other 10 cartriges.

buyer beware. thier reseller ratings were about a 7 when I orderd it has fallen to just under 5 now. Seems like they are doing a lot of shady business

Whats the Blondie song?
CALL ME!!
;p

Thats the phone number for my answering service, I totally don't mind if you call it.
In fact I encourage it, I want to hear some funny stuff.
This one time this parking garage or something place got the number wrong for one of their customers. They kept on calling and calling getting more annoyed each time that this person wasn't coming to collect her $2 they owed her. Finally they said you got till such and such or you ain't getting your $2.

Still got those ones saved, good stuff.

"24.76 shipped to me with "standard" shipping (I hope it's not USPS - they frequently lose my stuff) "

You should buy something else to get the total over $25 then the shipping is free. Might as well get something than paying for shipping.

According to my calculations, with a kWh costing 9.879 cents in my area, you are saving about 46 cents a month. Let's say you bought that PSU from newegg and you got the 380w model. That would mean that it will pay itself off in only 15.6 years! :)

Unless you went with the 430w model, it'll take about 19.2 years. Let's hope they last long enough to make the investment pay off. ;)

I believe you slipped up. So for arithmetic fans here's my take:

Lets figure something simple first, then adjust in proportion.

30 days times 24 hours gives 720 hours in a month (in case something is on 24/7)

100 watts, as for a 100 watt light, gives
720 times 100 = 72000 watt hours or 72 killowatt hours

10 cents a killowatt hour gives $7.20

That gives you somethng to base the rest on.

If you only use 50 watts, that's multiplying by .5 for
.5 x $7.20 = $3.60.
And that's roughly what you save a month for something that saves 50 watts and is on 24/7. If its on 8 hours a day, it's $1.20.

9.879 instead of 10 cents gives
.9879 x $3.60 = $3.56

You can check my arithmetic.

IAC, something that is on a large part of a day, and saves 50 watts can be worth on the order of 12 X $3.60 = $43.20 in savings a year. It is probably more than you imagine, but the key is how much time per day it is on. If it is on only 8 hours, or 1/3 of the day, you are down to $14.40 a year.

A power supply rated at 500 W does not use 500 W, it outputs at most 500 watts. Since an 80% efficient PS is pretty efficient, it would use 500/.80 = 625 watts at max output. But a realistic power use for heavy duty gaming system is probably under 200 W averaged, and the PS would draw less also. (Big PSs are used, I gather, on the theory that they handle peaks better.) But then power supplies used at a fraction of their output don't approach their rated efficiency either. But then PS specs are usually a total load of BS anyway. Without measuring, you have no idea what you are using.

I apologize. My math didn't feel right, but I really thought it was. Thanks very much for that. I have an X-Connect PSU which is supposedly not very power efficient. I would be interested in picking up something power efficient if it will pay itself off that quickly. Do you know where I can find out what the most power efficient power supply within reason would be?

Thanks for the post. Price is ok. I got one of these and found out my 30 year old refrigerator was costing me $15.00 a month to operate so I gave it away and got a small chest freezer and put an external thermostat on it so it works like a well insulated refrigerator and costs $1.50 a month to operate. The Kill a Watt is a great invention for the price and can pay for itself if you cut back on the right things or replace dated appliances with more efficient ones.
