Through high school I wore stuff from shoe warehouse. Generally a bit outdated, but still name brand and importantly not outrageously priced.

$10 light (i hate heavy shoes) monochrome (i hate crazy colors/patterns) velcro (i hate laces) walmart shoes are awesome!

Does anyone else find it ridiculous that children today are demanding high fashion when they are too young for it to even matter?

From Club Comic View:
"I took my daughter to buy shoes today, we stopped in front of the Payless Shoe Source and you know what she said?"

"Payless shoes ain't got no grip, make you fall and bust yo lip"

Sound off, 1,2, Sound off 3,4

When you are 14, you just want to fit in, and fitting in makes all the difference in a childs in a childs life. I dont know how old you are. I am 22, and I remember being in middle school and my parents wouldnt buy me any expensive shoes or clothes.

My problem with payless is the damned shoes are made of pure plastic and my feet do nothing but sweat. A nice pair of NB or Nike running shoes are very breathable and my feet stay so much cooler. Infinitely more comfortable.

I just bought a pair of NB 991's a couple weeks ago. $100 well spent IMHO.

If you want your kid to hang out with the cool kids, have sex with attractive other kids, and get the better drugs, get this kid the expensive shoes. If you want your kid to hang out with the dorky kids, have sex with unattractive other kids, and get the crappier drugs, get this kid the el-cheapo shoes.

🙂

ive found that in the following age groups:

0-6: brand name shoes
6-12: payless shoes
13-15: brand name shoes
16-...: nobody cares one way or another, comfort/looks/function >>> brand name recognition.

if you have the money why make your kids go through the humilation of being teased....

im not saying buy 100 dollar shoes but buy some decent ones that will last a while not plastic ones that fall apart in a few weeks

seriously folks its not cool to make your jr high or high schools kids go to school in spiderman velcro shoes..... 😛

Hmm, back in middle school and even into high school I always worse shoes that were atleast 100 dollars.

It wasn't so much that the brand mattered that much to me, it's just that I have really weirdly shaped feet, and brand name shoes would be the only ones that were comfortable enough for me.

Starting around 7th grade I had to buy everything for myself, other than shoes and clothes. I was supposed to pay for those too, but my mom knew I wouldn't buy that stuff for myself, and she wasn't going to have her kid looking ratty 🙂

I once got a pair of $80 Nikes when I was in middle school, and I felt guilty as hell. Not that my family is poor, quiet affluent acutally, but it just seemed like a waster once I got it. I stuck with TJ Maxx and Ross shoes after.

Up till about 10th grade I just bought cheap shoes from payless, but parents were very poor for a long time. Sometimes it would get to you, but generally it wasn't an issue unless someone tried to tease me for it. After that, I got shoes that are comfortable and they usually are 40-60 dollars, but I have only one pair of walking shoes that I use and they last a year.
Personally I like how girls have it. 60 dollars for a guys shoe might not be that much, but its quite expensive for females...they shoes are always like 15-25 dollars...I'd rather buy two or three pairs of shoes for 45-65 and rotate them every once in a while. The wear will be spread across several shoes, and thus will last longer.
Maybe if we were only like females shoe prices would drop since they buy them so often 😉

Either way for my kids till they get older will not be picking a shoe based on whats "cool". I'm glad my parents didn't let me spring for Nikes or anything because it gave me numerous lessons now that I think about it (though i don't think i was aware of it to any degree). Either way in college now it doesn't matter...if it looks nice and you look clean thats all that matters. To some people brand is still important but I view them a little less.

Here's my best advice to anyone...

If you can't spend much on shoes, get cheap and cool shoes instead.

Chuck Taylor low tops.........$40 at most.

You must somek some kind of crack. Like... some sort of experimental prototype crack.

..get over it. schools today are hiphop cell phone fashion shows..as for the kids..its too late. Education in too many other countries have reduced american kids to intellectual morons. If they started yesterday it would take 20 years or more to ovehaul the american educational system into something that turns out people with intelectual prowess..isn't your cellphone ringing??

I'd usually get Vans when I hit my teenage years. Don't think my parents ever spent over $30 on a pair of shoes for me which was perfectly fine. They fit, look decent, last a couple years, good enough for me.

I *STILL* buy crappy Target/Walmart shoes. In fact, this is the first time in my life in which I've owned more than one pair of casual, everyday shoes. I grabbed one pair at Walmart, one at Target.

do your kids a favor and get them a decent pair of shoes, you're not going to find anything good for under $50.
I agree that the OP should not skimp on the shoes (nor lavish excess either) but eastbay has some nice pumas for $60. I would bet that scouring f@twallet for coupons and/or searching other stores could net a nice pair for that $50 figure you mention. Of course, that's men's shoes .. ladies could be a whole different story - I don't know about that and I don't want to 😉

when i was a kid, all i did all day was run around, playing pick-up games of sports, tag, whatever. i was always on my feet and by the time i was 8 i was already dealing with shin splints, stress fractures in my heels, and knee pain. nike air's helped me tremendously, and even though i consider nike tremendously UNCOOL these days, i still keep a pair on hand for anything i might do that's more demanding than walking. brand may not matter, but quality does, and nike just makes good shoes. now that i am an adult, if i can beat the hell out of a pair of shoes for 5 years and have them still be cushiony, comfortable, and wearable, i am willing to pay for it. i could care less about style for shoes like that, i just want comfort and quality. when i want style i wear chuck taylors anyway (with big-ass insoles, of course).

of course, converse is owned by nike these days, but that's a coincidence and wasn't true when i started wearing them.
